The Chautauqua association met last night to decide on canceling this year’s program due to insufficient financial backing and weak ticket sales. Despite enlarging the plan, individuals refused support and purchases. directors may cancel contracts Monday, while keeping the association intact for now.
The steamer Merida bound for Progresso Yucatan was cut in two by the steamer Admiral Farragut off Cape Charles. The Merida sank and her crew were rescued by the Farragut with the Iowa battleship aiding in transfers to Farragut. Some crew members, including the captain and four crew, are missing and may have perished. The Iowa and Hamilton are heading toward Norfolk carrying the Farragut passengers.
The La Grande Chautauqua directors vow to finalize contracts with notable acts including J Frank Han od Indiana and Gabriel Me the African explorer, amid financial strain. Public support wanes as perceived costs rise and potential losses push decisions to next Monday with binding options discussed.
Governor Woodrow Wilson arrives in Los Angeles for a three day stay as part of a Pacific coast tour. He will give public speeches amid speculation about his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination before continuing to San Francisco Portland and Seattle.
A preliminary physical and medical examination will be held at Lincoln High School in Portland at 9 AM on Saturday May 27. The test is under Superintendent F Rigler to select eligibles for nomination by Congressman A W Lafferty for Navy midshipman appointments based on highest general averages among applicants.
Mr Lafferty recommends Cande Mbated and others to report for final examination at the Naval Academy on June 20 IIT.

El Paso board of health and U S authorities seize and burn clothing worn by federals at the international bridge to prevent disease spread. Precautions intensified as health officials act to curb contamination risks.
The two candidates with the highest votes between May 8 and May 20 may receive a guest trip to the Portland Rose Festival at the Observer's expense, contingent on winning in the final prize distribution. All candidates, including late entrants, have a similar chance for these companion trips.
La Grande residents with top votes in Contest District No 1 will become guests of the Observer at the Portland Rose Festival. Voters’ tallies list participants including Eva Cotner, Mrs B B Nutter, Frankie Combs, Irma Martin, Mildred Stephenson, Mrs Williams, Ada Davis, Alic h Snow, and others at various street addresses. Names indicate multiple contestants among local residents vying for Observer hospitality prize.
The Observer will host the top vote-getters from Union County excluding LaGrande at the Portland Rose Festival. District 3 covers Wallowa county and Pine and Eagle valleys with three leading candidates winning Observer trips to San Francisco or hotel and side tours in Portland, plus scholarships or lessons in lieu of trips.
