Rail flood halts Oregon trains as La Grande waits

Heavy rains and rapid thaw disrupt the O R N line from Wyatt to Huron with washed tracks and landslides. Bridges undermined and mountain abutments weakened trap traffic west of La Grande, delaying trains, piling mail, and forcing meals for stranded travelers. Restoration may take a week.

Bold Spokane train robbery stuns three mail clerks

On March 16 a lone robber impersonating a postoffice inspector boarded at Bonners Ferry Idaho and over three hours stole a mail sack full of coin and valuables while freeing and restraining two clerks. He smoked a cigar, handled letters deftly, and jumped off near Spokane after the car reached the city limits. Bloodhounds were used but the thief vanished.

Hornbeck Sentenced For Non-Support By Judge Crawford

Judge Crawford refused to grant a certificate of probable cause for appeal in the State va Hornbeck case. Hornbeck was convicted by a jury of non support of his wife and child and sentenced to 12 months in the county jail with road work or a $400 monthly bond to assure support. The judge delivered a stern lecture and ordered careful execution of the sentence.
