Norfolk Virginia July 23 Coast artillerymen Faulkner Park Wigley Hawk and Cook received certificates of bravery for conduct in the recent gun explosion.
Relatives of Benjamin Smith, son of Addison Smith private secretary to Idaho Senator Hayburn, refuse to believe he was shot accidentally by a camping party member in Virginia. Benjamin and his brother Walter with friends were vacationing when a girl asked to see his pistol and it discharged hitting Smith in the temple, killing him. Witnesses call it accidental but the family suspects foul play and travels home as inquiry continues.
The Isis offers a fine Saturday program for matinee and evening crowds. Manager Mr. Sherwood again delivers a popular lineup, with family friendly matinee and weekend showings noted. The Isis ad in this issue lists the films.
In Pittsburg on July 28 Countess Deavies prepares to display her husband’s heart in Spain to prove his death and claim an estate spanning thousands of acres. The Count, once Chilean consul at Pittsburg, will present the heart to authorities as required by law.
Mount Desert Maine July 23 Taft party came ashore early today and boarded a train for Bangor where the president spoke ten minut.
Reports from Portland and Victoria say rain eases a network of fires across the Northwest. Idaho's Pine Creek blaze covers hundreds of square miles with crews fighting hard, while Oregon's Hoquiam and Clearwater areas show containment and improving conditions with more rain expected.
Dr. Davidson Buchanan, noted traveler and lecturer, will speak at the Latter Day Saints tabernacle Sunday night July 24 at 8 o clock under the Mutual Improvement association. The free lecture titled Strange Scenes in Foreign Lands aims to share insights from world travels and diverse cultures. All are invited to attend this public event.
A Dallas Texas party in a large Packard bound for The Dalles Oregon passed through La Grande, stopping at Smith garage for a brush up. A Buick from Phoenix Arizona bound for Seattle arrived with two men. The Packard team then took train while the driver and a companion stayed with the car crossing the mountains. Several ladies rode with the Dallas group. They endured extreme heat through the Bad Lands but the trip was otherwise uneventful.
A crowd gathers at Black Flat near Hilgard for a popular Oregon camping place. Frank Bay B W Noyes and others have spent a week there and more will join tomorrow. The group plans to stay in three nearby camps with Measera and Mesdames Bay Noyes H M Bay Snodgrass Scriber Oscar Jackson Ruth Bush among early attendees.
O R N officials gather in Baker City to dedicate the new depot with high company officials and local citizens invited to a banquet at the Baker City hotel. Headed east, officials including J P O'Brien and W Cotton visit from Huntington and return, with several hundred expected to attend.
Mrs. Longworth, daughter of Colonel Roosevelt, praised an elderly unnamed woman for defending her against cigarette smoking. In a Pittsburg playgoing circle discussion a participant noted grandmothers smoked and suggested allowing Alice to smoke if she wishes, humorously referencing their method.
The land office closed early at 1 pm for a regular Saturday holiday and received homestead filings from Warren A. Flayer of Halfway, a farmer, and Henry Stephen of Sparta. Chief Clerk George Carpy officiated at the receivers desk while Mr. Bherahré vacationed at Joseph.

The steamer Momus caught fire at sea off Cape Canaveral Florida while transferring passengers to safety. The sister ship Comus stood by to take on Manus passengers as the crew fought the blaze. Reports say none were hurt.
Miss Blanch Stuart and Miss Gertrude Phil Hps of New York arrived in San Francisco by automobile after a 5322 mile 41 day journey. They were greeted by motor enthusiasts and a parade of over 100 autos after crossing the Oakland ferry. The travelers say they fixed their own punctures to avoid male interference, proving women can cross the continent alone.
