Thousands cheer as Charles F Walsh lifts a hot air machine to about 200 feet over Grande Ronde Valley. The display lasts from takeoff to a dramatic 40 foot landing near the grandstand, drawing praise and local admiration.
Philip S Bates special representative for the Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Good Roads group arrives in La Grande to launch lectures in Union and Wallowa counties. Accompanied by Marshall Dana of the Portland Journal they plan talks on roads and county resources, with daily wire reports and a Sunday page story. Delays shift start dates and local arrangements for halls and equipment are being sought.
Rochester roars with red fez regalia as the Imperial Council of the Mystic Shrine begins its annual sessions. Delegations arrive from the east and west for parades, drills, and a water carnival ending with a grand ball at the New York state armory.

Laird Commissioner Dennett and Miss Abbott found letters from Richard Ryan to Ballinger and Neward subpoenas. Secretary Fisher denied letters exist and Taft does not recall discussing the matter with his brother Charles.
Death Valley Scotty arrives in Goldfield with pockets full of money and promises to reveal the location of his supposed wealth after August first. He plans another dramatic cross country dash on a special train.
Thirteen deaths due to extreme heat occurred in Chicago in the last 24 hours with no relief expected. Forecasters warn tomorrow will be hotter. Four deaths were reported in New York by noon as heat continues to grip the region.

B E Kennedy former Baker Herald publisher visits La Grande with a friend. He recently returned from southern California where months of rest aided his rheumatic condition. He witnessed an aviation meet and praised Walsh's work. Kennedy plans to travel to Mt. Lake to spend time with Senator Pierce and Fred B. Currey.
The National Education Association began its 49th annual convention in San Francisco with more than 25 000 attendees expected. Governor Johnson Mayor McCarthy and UC President Wheeler welcomed delegates as Ella Flagg Young was introduced. David Starr Jordan spoke on education and temperance, closing the initial session with remarks by Colorado state official Marsh Wixson.
