A local drive in La Grande Oregon sees ten investors offered shares at ten dollars each with early uptake and promises to buy more. The plan foresees a nonprofit type stock scheme for funding an athletic grounds and gym hall for youth with the city high school allowed to purchase shares at par, no dividends or assessments.
Chicago reports banker John R. Walsh former Chicago National Bank and Home Savings bank president and Chicago Chronicle proprietor was found guilty on 62 counts of misappropriating bank funds. The jury, out thirty hours, held that Walsh used deposits to promote rail and other ventures and tampered with bank books to mislead examiners. Walsh vowed the fight had only just begun.
President Roosevelt announced a commission of scientists from the University of California Yale Chicago University and Johns Hopkins to study the enforcement of the pure food laws. The panel will tackle the broad and ongoing problems in this field, a matter of wide citizen interest with no recent general legislation guiding it.
