Pioneer H W Oliver of Grande Ronde Dies at 76

Hiram Wealey Oliver, early Oregon settler, died January 16 1904 at Summerville. He crossed the plains in 1864 and owned the valley’s first sawmill, helped build La Grande, and pioneered horticulture with a 15 acre orchard. Survived by wife Maria L Burt and seven children. Funeral at Summerville Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Francis J. Heney opened the Hall Mayes land fraud case in Portland Oregon on January 16 delivering a dry statement of facts. He said he would prove Hall and Mays conspired to defraud the government of public lands and that Hall threatened indictments unless political support was given to Charles W. Fulton against T. Geer. He suggested confessions by defendants support the case.

Falling limb injures young man near North Powder

A severely bruised young man, working with his father in a theater project about 12 miles from North Powder, was struck on the head by a falling limb from a tree. Perch Brewater, brought from North Powder to Grande Ronde hospital with head injuries, was involved in the incident. Steiner may testify for the state about the case.
