State Auditor Bragaw files a writ of prohibition in the Idaho Supreme Court to bar Governor Gooding and state officials from interfering with his office. The case centers on Bragaw refusing to issue deficiency warrants in the Moyer Haywood and Pettibone matters and the denial of salary warrants for his wife and son. Bragaw also sues Governor Gooding and the Boise Statesman for 50000 dollars.
Found solvent in New York, the Hamilton bank will reopen January 20 with 1 400 000 on hand after a suspension during the recent financial flurry.
New York January 14 The Thaw trial opens with Dr Demar Littelton the Thaw family physician testifying that as a child and boy Thaw was wild eyed and erratic. The defense plans a life history approach to expose Thaws weaknesses and hidden conduct while prosecutors push for other evidence.
The San Francisco graft inquiry deepens as Abraham Ruef and Francis Heney dominate the scene. Ruef demands absolute immunity before testifying, while Heney resists and says Ruef will not back down from his position. The San Francisco Call reports the confrontation and ongoing power struggle.
San Francisco January 14 Judge Dunne refused to enter any agreement granting Ruef immunity in the graft indictments. The district attorney Langdon had pressed for guarantees to secure Ruef as a key witness. The judge said motions or agreements must be presented in open court, leaving the outcome uncertain.
