Spokane police captain dies from gunshot wounds after an assassination attempt. Officials say the shooting occurred during a tense confrontation, and the department vows to continue the investigation and pursue justice.
Spokane January 7. Police Captain Sullivan shot Thursday and died after saying I want more air. Rewards totaling twelve thousand dollars offered for the assassin. H W Connors jeweler and three others arrested as detectives from the nation join the hunt. Bertillon fingerprint experts study frosted window prints.
A simple funeral service for the late Senator Elkins was held in Elkins West Virginia after a Washington bound train arrived at 8 30 am. Mrs Elkins was prostrated and stayed at home. The coffin was taken to the Presbyterian church for a brief service and the interment occurred at Maplewood cemetery. Employees of the Elkins estate served as pallbearers with honorary pallbearers including Senators Scott Bacon Bally Foster Carter Smith Root and Representatives Rucker Alexander Longworth Calderhead and Lamb.
F. B. Moore, longtime clerk at Ontario hotel, reports that P A Foley becomes sole owner and manager after J J Foley retires to study. Jerry Foley departs for Portland to continue education at Columbia University. Foley Bros. firm dissolves with P A Foley as proprietor.
The hotel has been fully overhauled from bottom to top and is effectively new. Li B Moore, formerly at Ontario, familiar with drummers along with Hine, will serve as day clerk. In Skagit county a pistol duel involving Charles Robinson and others led to the deaths of Galbraithe and W. R. Stevens. A large posse hunts Ben Lowe as officials attempt to arrest theft suspects. L. K. Hume was shot on a train by Deputy Gabrel and is recovering. Robinson is wounded and jailed in Sedro Woolley.
Gene Quilicl, proprietor of a Reno area saloon in Imlay, was murdered by three assailants who looted $1200 from the safe and tried to thwart an alarm. Police in Nevada and California have descriptions and are monitoring trains for the suspects.
Washington reports Brigadier General Pershing says the United States would rely on native Mindanao troops in an emergency. He notes natives would respond loyally and proposes native scouts as a nucleus for a standing army.
