A government battle over Sherman anti trust law tests constitutional limits as efforts to curb a tobacco dominated trust advance. Key figures remain unnamed but state action signals an intensified push to dismantle industrial control.
The Supreme Court opens a final hearing on the government versus the tobacco trusts over the Sherman act. Attorneys debate whether the act is unconstitutional and if it can curb the Tobacco Trust with a capital over 460 million dollars. The case, argued previously, seeks a full bench decision on the act’s reach.
President Taft declared fines ineffective against wealth and refused to commute the sentence of W S Harlan, a wealthy Florida Alabama turpentine operator convicted of peonage. He stated imprisonment is needed to enforce the sentence and prevent recurrence by men of large affairs. Harlan faced a $5000 fine and eighteen months in jail. Taft later commuted the sentence to alx.
Spokane January 6 The former Spokane Chief of Police John Sullivan, now captain of police, was shot in the right lung from outside the window. He was able to call for help, doctors say recovery is likely, and a $7,500 reward is offered for the assassin. Police suspect an ex prisoner sought revenge. S. H. Elverum, CW special officer, was arrested in connection with the shooting as the council votes a reward.
David Zimmerle of Seattle arrives with two Seattle financiers to inspect Grande Ronde orchard tracts. The La Graside Investment Company hosts the visitors as they tour the area and consider spending significant sums. They will remain two or three days.
Sheriff What com of Skagit county leads 100 volunteers and bloodhounds scouring the Acme area for two armed men who killed Justice of the Peace Galpra and wounded W. E. Bugens of Key City Logging Co. during a store robbery. Authorities guard all routes as dogs track scent from the thieves’ old shoes.
Mrs J M Selder wife of County Commissioner Selder died in Portland this morning. The couple had moved to Portland for the winter seeking ease after a long life of hard work in the Grande Ronde valley. Details were not conveyed and B D Selder awaits further information before travel. The remains may be brought to Cove for interment.
Investigators probe transfer of half a million dollar estate and residence of Joseph Robin to his sister Dr Louise Robinvich before the ex banker surrenders over alleged eighty thousand dollar theft from Northern Bank of New York. The Driftwood Manor property covers 112 acres and the house cost 125000 dollars. Witness Dharles Janichan recalls weekend automobile parties with a ten person crowd including chorus girl women and lively dancing ending with chandeliers being kicked. Summer water dances in the surf were noted as well.
County Fruit Inspector Stilwell condemned 500 boxes of apples stored in the Oliver warehouse last evening. The fruit will be repacked as a result.
The county court reviewed the tax levy for the year. Total levies amount to 34 mills with the state at two mills and school and city components adjusted. Earlier delays due to missing data from Salem postponed final decisions.
San Francisco delegates from major aviation teams arrive for the second international aviation meet. A dozen famed aviators including Wright-Curtiss representatives, Hubert Latham for France, James Radley for England, and American crews prepare for seven days of competition. Sacramento reports a bill by Senator Hare to regulate aviators, weather checks, medical examination, and aircraft inspection before flights.
A large Farmers Co-Operative Union gathering is planned in the city January 13 and 14. Baker, Wallowa, and Union counties will send about 100 delegates each to a tri county convention with state officials in attendance. Notables include C. C. Conner Pendleton Waterman The Dalles Brown Arlington Norris La Grande Williams Buhl Idaho. Pendleton will also send several delegates and organizer Mr. Cox is expected.
Rome reports suggest Senator Elking's death may be followed by a marriage between Katherine Hiking and the Duke D Abrusel with opposition from Senator Biking. Italian king allegedly informed Elkins kin that a purely organic marriage to the American heiress is needed, while Mrs Elking is said to favor the suit.
LaFollette magazine editorial urges voters nationwide to elect delegates to the 1919 national convention through direct primaries. It argues Wall Street should not select the president and calls all states to join the movement to secure a pledged platform.
