Labor demand rises for railroad work this summer
The Baker City Herald reports that railroad labor demand is set to rebound with spring. Work on the north coast road, Elgin extension of the O R and N, Huntington extension of the Oregon Short Line, and Lewiston and Riparia branches are expected to begin soon, likely clearing the labor market but leaving a shortage of men. Camps from Spokane to Missoula fill up with Americans preferred over Austrians, while many local foreigners remain idle awaiting better outdoor work. Wages for common construction labor are $4 and $2.50 daily, down from six months ago. Spokane shows little demand and many applicants for unskilled roles.
