A House select committee reports urging President Roosevelt to provide the evidence behind his charge that members of Congress feared investigation by the secret service. The panel expects the president has the information ready, and the issue may be aired. All Northwest representatives voted aye on the division.
Senator Jonathan Bourne of Oregon introduced a bill to raise the president’s salary from 50 000 to 100 000 dollars and the vice president’s from 12 000 to 25 000. He argues current pay is inadequate to maintain the official establishment.
The supreme court on Tuesday reversed Judge Cleland of Portland and affirmed referee J. W. Knowles in the case of Farmers & Traders National Bank versus Booth. Knowles found the bank owed Booth about 260 dollars after testimony taken by consent before Knowles as referee. Cleland modified the referee findings and awarded Booth a small judgment plus costs. The supreme court ordered judgment against Booth for the amount found due by the referee.
The Times reports belief that Francia J. Heney is paid from secret service funds to prosecute graft in San Francisco. Heney denies it, calling the charge absolute rot and saying Roosevelt had no involvement. The piece notes Senate interest in possible investigation of the secret service system.
Clare J Seriber of La Grande son of J W Seriber filed for bankruptcy in Portland U S district court. Liabilities total 26557 dollars with 24330 dollars claimed as amounts that should be paid by others. Assets amount to 2200 dollars of which 1600 dollars are exempt under law.
Washington received dispatches from Paxton Hibben confirming Venezuela has declared war on Holland. The Colombian foreign minister relayed a Caracas telegram dated the 14th noting Venezuela's defense measures and the blockade and capture of Venezuelan vessels led to a state of war declaration.
In Portland Maine on December 17 officials report a drop in sardine catch and packing due to coastal shortages. The alleged combine faces scrutiny after a season yielding 22 percent less than expected, with independent packers also reporting shortfalls. Meanwhile the advance sale for Little Johnny Jones indicates strong attendance at the opera house.
Washington December 17 The house ways and means committee on tariff revision nears the end of hearings opened November 10. It will sum up and draft a tariff bill for the opening of the special session in March. The committee largely preserves its members with Crumpacker replacing Watson. Thousands of pages will record the testimony of hundreds of witnesses, each tied to a special interest urging higher duties or Dingley rates continuation.

Idaho lawmakers plan a winter appropriation of 20000 to improve the upper Snake River above Lewiston. Local legislators generally favor the proposal as conversations continue.

Portland reports Dr. G B Whitney charged with killing his fiancée Mabel Wirtz by giving poison was found guilty of manslaughter today and will be sentenced next week.
