Mary Rogers Sentenced to Hanging in Whiteriver Junction

Governor Bell refused reprieve for Mary Rogers as U S marshal awaited last moment clemency. Execution proceeded at 1 14 PM with the hood on and a gold chai necklace observed by onlookers. Prison officials described a sorrowful last night and a silent response at the scaffold.

Senator John H. Mitchell of Oregon Dies at 78

Oregon statesman Senator John H. Mitchell, veteran U.S. senator and former Portland leader, died at Good Samaritan hospital after a long illness worsened by recent dental surgery and severe diabetes. Witte Resigns as Russia’s Minister to Czar

In St. Petersburg on December 7, Minister Witte handed his resignation to the Czar. The Czar tore the paper, flung it at Witte, and ordered him to stay. The ruler later said he would have liked to dismiss Witte but needs him through the crisis. Witte cited dissatisfaction with treatment and fear he cannot restore order.
