Midnight Assassin Kills Joba Sedrick in Butte Montana

In Helena Montana on December 8, Joba Sedrick was shot dead near the Brannd house in Butte while returning home with Joba Lachui. An unknown man emerged from behind a dump and shot Sedrick in the neck, causing instant death. Authorities doubt robbery was the motive and suspect a personal grudge or mistaken identity. Sedrick's ally Ludrick, elderly and infirm, could not identify the killer.

Washington reports brief House session lasting 15 minutes as Bingham of Pennsylvania offers the legislative executive and judicial appropriation bill totaling 23 838 709 to be considered tomorrow. In the Senate executive session, four cabinet nominees and Postmaster Wilcox of New York and Indian Commissioner Leupp are confirmed. Platt of New York introduces a bill to reduce House representation after March 8 1907 from 86 to 67 in 10 southern states. Senate plans a vote on the Philippine franchise bill Friday December 16.

Open Columbia River to Steamers by May Next Year

The Columbia River access may open by May with steamers from Lewiston Idaho to Celilo. Contracts for two upper river steamers will be let in February to operate between Celilo and Lewiston linking with the Telephone service from Celilo to Portland. A portage road at Celilo and a seven mile railroad around the river obstruction are planned to complete the route.

Circuit Court at Baker hears horse-stealing case

The Baker Circuit Court opened with jury selection for the State versus Jas. Hall on horse stealing. The court may wrap up tonight. Other matters include M K Young v Mose Fuchs administrator, judgment for plaintiff. Allis Chalmere v Geo Beattie receiver demurrer. State v Henry Wilson not guilty plea. State v John Livingston to morrow. State v Geo Shields not guilty plea.

About 500 head are being fed near Echo as a small number for winter, due to extremely low beef prices. Large herds rely on alfalfa fields while pasturage is depleted, and bay feeding starts around November 1.

Subpoenas have been served and twenty witnesses reportedly unlocatable as the Smoot investigation opens in Washington Monday. Two Brigham Young University professors at Provo were served today and are expected to testify about polygamy taught in Mormon schools.

Sentencing Put Off in Land Fraud Case

The United States district court granted a brief respite for most convicted conspirators yesterday after the verdict. Next Tuesday eight defendants including Pater McKinley Emma Wetson and Mizis Wass face a second indictment for conspiring to defraud the government of public lands. Marie Ware was acquitted but faces more specific charges in the new case. Tarplay remains outside the next indictment and Walgamot, already guilty, has no further appeal. The remaining defendants plan appeals to the San Francisco based United States circuit court of appeals, likely four to five months for a decision.
