The observer reports a funds shortage in the U S land office under Receiver A A Roberts but exact amount remains unclear. Government expert Dunning estimates 700 to 1500 dollars, with Roberts calling in an inspector and drawing a personal check to cover the deficit.
A masked bandit attempted to rob the First National Bank of Ellensburg Washington at opening time. He demanded stacks of gold and silver, fired a shot that wounded the assistant cashier in the arm, then fled as a posse pursued.
A Sunday Oregon hotel blaze near Portland sent smoke through corridors and elevator shafts trapping Mr. and Mrs. Bramwell who narrowly escaped asphyxiation. They awoke to a smoke filled third floor and, guided by Mr Bramwell, escaped to safety with no injuries among guests.
Washington reports a week of notable visitors and conventions focused on natural resource conservation. Taft will chair the joint conference while Roosevelt opens the event. W. G. Peach, a Grande Ronde valley pioneer who settled near Island City in 1873, died at age 75 after a three year illness. He leaves four children James, George Pouch, Mary Young and Angie Van Tress. The funeral is planned for Wednesday with services at the Peach home and Island City church, followed by burial in Peach cemetery.
The Iowa Senate set daily noon meeting times and formed committees to notify the president Congress is ready for messages. Senator Dolliver mourned the death of a colleague and offered a resolution of grief later adopted by the Senate, which then adjourned. Governor Cummins, chosen successor of the late Senator Allinson, is expected to be sworn in tomorrow.
The National Apple Show opened in Spokane with President Roosevelt pressing the button at the White House. Louis W. Hill delivered the opening address as five million dollars in fruit are displayed. Hood River is not represented due to a scoring dispute, though the area had prepared an exhibit. fruitgrowers from the Pacific Northwest converge for meetings, with fountain pens offered as Christmas gifts at Silverthorn & Mack's.
A new irrigation project in La Grande begins with a preliminary survey of a large water ditch. Engineers Pickler and team start the survey as committees seek to raise 20 000 acres for irrigation. Backers promise decay of large holdings and wealth growth across Grande Ronde valley.
Indianapolis December 7 President Lewis of the United Mine Workers of America denounces his enemies as character assassins and vows to expose them at the next national convention. He will not name individuals now but promises to tear off their masks then and warns that personal attacks on his name will meet penalty.
