Curious Ice Bed Turns Cellar into Cold Storage Plant
Frank Rogers of Menastash canyon near Ellensburg has a natural ice bed encountered five to six feet down while digging a well. The bed creates a constant near zero temperature, allowing meat to stay fresh indefinitely in a cellar now used as a storage plant. The site sits about 600 feet above the canyon and 100 feet above Ellensburg. Rogers remains independent of any icy factory, a fortunate condition noted by the Ellensburg Localizer.

The Oregon State Fair in Salem runs September 10 to 15. A special rate from Oregon later two agencies offers one and one third fare to Portland plus 2.26 for a ticket through to Salem. Sale dates are September 6 8 and 13 with continuous passage allowed to September 17. Stopovers are not allowed. Children half fare age pay half the above rate. Return tickets must be validated by a Southern Pacific agent in Salem or at the fairgrounds.
