Promises of warmer weather draw crowds to the fair grounds where the stock show opens with the largest exhibits in its history. Vendors report record livestock numbers and visitors fill the grounds as opening day draws near.
The La Crosse Interstate fair opens with over 250 dogs entered in AKC judged classes and a large horse racing program led by 2:18 and 2:22 pace events. Charles H. Niles from New York will exhibit a Curtiss aeroplane and perform daily flights. The weather promises a warm, clear week as Secretary Van Auken and staff prepare crowded grounds and rail lines fill with livestock from Milwaukee and Minneapolis.
A head on crash between two Long Island railroad electric trains near College Point, New York, left three motormen dead and twenty passengers injured. Both trains, No 311 inbound and No 305 eastbound, carried steel cars and four coaches. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and hospitals received the injured as casualties were removed from wreckage.
Benjamin Benedict superintendent of Wild Rose Stock Farm near Geneva NL was charged with attempted murder after firing a shotgun at a group of foreigners who resisted orders to quit picking grapes. The wounded man was taken to hospital and Benedict surrendered to the Geneva constable.
Firemen rescued Mrs. Isaac Weiss and her three year old son from a blaze that destroyed their Milwaukee home late Sunday night. Units carried them down a ladder to safety as flames gutted the residence.
Former President Taft and Mayor Adolph Kline led honorary pallbearers as 500 000 residents lined Broadway for the funeral procession of Mayor William Jay Gaynor. Police and fire units formed ranks from City Hall to Trinity Church while tears flowed from Police Commissioner Waldo at the bell chimes.
About 1 500 students from two high schools led by a loud band marched through Syracuse to demand shorter school hours better lunches and oppose frat abolition. Police were called to disperse the parade.

The Rev. Anthony M. Haley pastor of St. Mary Greek Catholic church was jailed after a clash among factions. Mrs. George Berger and two men faced possible imprisonment on disorderly conduct charges and a woman claimed the priest bit off the end of her thumb.
Motorboats scoured the lake today for a gasoline launch with five fishermen missing since yesterday afternoon. The missing party includes William Wainwright William T Rupe Frank Joseph and Thomas Rupke. Mrs Wainwright reported the disappearance to police at daybreak.
Several damage suits arising from injuries in the Burlington wreck at Trempealeau were filed against the road. One case settled for 100 dollars with claims the road is responsible for passenger injuries on the Oriental Limited. Ernest Reed of Pittsburg filed suit for 5000 dollars. other suits expected soon.
John L. Alexander of New York City spent a day in the city urging formal organization of Sunday school classes as separate societies with presidents secretaries and committees. He spoke at the Congregational church the Caledonia Street Methodist church and the Y M C A to Boy Scout and Sunday school workers highlighting the national scope of religious education and the Teen Age as a National Asset. He was hosted at a noon luncheon by 100 business leaders and scheduled to lecture on Giants and Fairies of Religious Education and the Teen Age as a National Asset later that evening.
Mrs Alma Kronberg likely saved her husband by leaping in front of him to block a knife thrust from Fred Falkner. The blade struck a corset steel and Kronberg remained unharmed.
A court case ends as the dancer gives up an attempted hold. Details remain sparse but indicate resolution without trial.
Frederick W. Von Frantius files for divorce claiming Saharet was unduly intimate with him and other men. He alleges they lived together one week after marriage before she left for London and a European tour with Jose Florido accompanying her in Chicago.

In Marmoth North Dakota on September 22, Mrs. Herman Ostrander was away briefly when her two young daughters aged two and four fell into a rain barrel and drowned.

Henry G. Casslin master mechanic for the Chicago Burlington Quincy at Beardstown Ill has been named to replace Nathaniel Frey at La Crosse. Frey resigns due to ill health and private business and will leave La Crosse October 15 moving to De Soto Wis to enter stock raising.
A sheriff's posse hunts three suspects after Quincy Drummonds Ewell Hutchins and Harman Wyant were attacked on a Benton Illinois road returning from a dance. Drummonds Hutchins died and Wyant was fatally injured. Three suspects have been arrested.
Farros completed preparations for a Mediterranean crossing and plans to fly tomorrow. He declined government torpedo boat escorts along his proposed route.
Yeggmen wrecked two safes at John Procos fruit dealer at 226 North Dearborn early today and escaped with 589 dollars in cash and checks totaling 1 096 dollars according to police reports.
