The first clue to the hidden Oktoberfest Medallion is issued today with 200 pieces of silver worth 50 in quarters awaiting the finder. Additional clues will appear in the Tribune and on local radio stations on succeeding days. The first clue hints at a weather sheltered, stationary, silent object waiting to be found.
Jean Gitz 52 and Harold Deak Swanson 35 were named Maple Leaf and Torchlight parade marshals for Oktoberfest in La Crosse. Gitz, a longtime community leader, and Swanson, North Side alderman and business leader, will preside over the Maple Leaf Parade October 2 and Torchlight Parade October 7.
Republican Charles Whaley Jr and Democrat John Medinger won early victories in the 95th Assembly District primary. Whaley led 22 districts with 3 309 votes, while Medinger totaled 1 482 votes across 11 districts and tied for lead in another.
Douglas Farmer a La Crosse county supervisor and bank loan officer won the Republican 32nd Senate District primary Tuesday in unofficial counts leading in La Crosse County with 5 583 votes to his opponents 1 975 1 789 and 624 He also led the district totals 7 311 while opponents trailed Farmer faces retiring Milo Knutson in the general election with Paul Offner unopposed in the Democratic race.
La Crosse Republican Gundersen defeated Timothy Bearson for the 3rd District nomination and will face Democratic incumbent Alvin Baldus in November. Baldus led county votes in several counties and issued a multi county debate challenge with dates from Oct 1 to Oct 21.
Ex-Aide Michael Mulroy wins the Republican nomination for district attorney defeating Peter Berg while incumbent Edmund Nix trails. Unofficial totals: Mulroy 5730, Berg 4147, Nix 4382. Nix plans to campaign after the primary as Mulroy criticizes Nix as too political.
In Milwaukee the Wisconsin primary nominees include U S Senate William Proxmire and Stanley York both unopposed. House candidates span eight districts with numerous unopposed Ds and Rs and several contested for district seats.
