A man narrowly escaped death when heat and injuries drove him to rush into the path of a fast mail train on Sunday. Witnesses said he acted in a frenzy and was pulled back to safety by bystanders. The incident halted service briefly as crews assisted Police investigated.
John Gannon Jr., 28, secretary of the La Crosse Bottlers' union, was found on the C M St Paul tracks near Newport Minnesota in a naked state after being beaten and robbed. He had $83 missing and is unable to speak coherently as doctors treat sunstroke and injuries. He rode from La Crosse to St Paul four days earlier and is now in St Joseph's hospital under care.
