Maj Richard L Johnson clocked an unofficial 170 mph average over 1.86 miles in an air race test but three of six passes were disqualified for camera and course errors. Officials must reattempt when weather allows to establish a new world speed record.
Lieut. Gen Kuzma Derevyanko fresh from Moscow renewed Soviet protests against Gen Douglas MacArthur's labor policy. He demanded immediate cancellation of the ban on strikes by government workers. Derevyanko spoke through a press officer at a hastily called conference, not appearing in person.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a garage and automobile belonging to Bernard Stellpflug in Trempealeau Wisconsin. Galesville and Trempealeau fire departments responded and prevented spread to adjacent structures.
Considerable cloudiness and local thunder showers with wind squalls likely tonight. Clearing Tuesday brings cooler air with a low around 58 and a high near 80.
President Truman told about 20 000 people in Grand Rapids that Congress failed to pass a low cost housing measure because Senator Taft ran out on his own bill. He attacked the real estate lobby and the Republican majority as he promoted the Wagner bill and federal aid for building low rent housing.

Washington denounces Bulgaria's ouster of American vice consul Donald F. Ewing as a frameup describing his July arrest as fabrications. Bulgarian radio claimed Ewing received written espionage data from two agents tied to American intelligence.
The Monona Leader in McGregor Iowa published a single sheet issue on September 2 after the sudden disappearance of the linotype operator and printer. Publisher R A Nehls explains the paper's abbreviated format while noting that R F Farrington forged the publisher's name on five checks to flee with funds.
On Labor Day 1948, about 58 000 workers were idle amid major strikes. West coast maritime workers, refinery staffs, and oil unions pressed wage and non Communist affidavit demands under Taft Hartley, while governors warned fuel shortages and local rationing loomed. Men born in 1925 will register Tuesday at the La Crosse county draft board center in the Vocational school gymnasium. Those born in 1926 will register on Wednesday and Thursday under the selective service act of 1948. Vocational school headquarters are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. including noon.
Communist led demonstrators smashed Berlin city hall using battering rams and broken windows. Two American correspondents were injured and a third photographer’s camera was smashed during rioting in the building as Soviet controlled police failed to intervene. The unrest, the third in 10 days, aimed to oust the anti Communist government and pave the way for a potential action committee government amid the Soviet blockade crisis. The pope urged German Catholics to be prepared for severe action against atheistic communism.
Moscow radio reports Russia has requested a meeting of the United States, Britain, France, and itself before September 15 to settle Italy's prewar colonies, including Somaliland Eritrea and Libya. The United States says no note was received in Washington. If no agreement is reached by the treaty deadline, the UN will decide.
