AFL and CIO parades and picnics are scheduled in La Crosse on Labor Day with two processions from Pioneer hall and Market square to Copeland and Myrick parks. CIO begins at 9 a.m. with a parade past Local No. 396 and multiple unions. AFL forms at Market square for march to Myrick park. Paul Mantz won the Bendix cross country race for a third time with an average speed of 447.980 mph on a 2045 mile course from Long Beach California. Linton B Carney of Houston finished second at 446.112 mph and Jacqueline Cochran placed third at 445.847 mph amid oil pressure issues and a disappointed finish. Floyd B Odlum greeted Cochran after the climb to the podium as others battled head winds and fuel concerns.
