Washington reports in Congress will debate a parcels post plan backed by Postmaster General Meyer with Roosevelt support as opposition forms from express firms and retailers. In Madison Wisconsin Governor Davidson pardoned Wilhelmina Bahr after new evidence showed she did not commit the 17 year old Zell murder, freeing her from life imprisonment.
A fogbound crash near Cochrane Wisconsin involved Burlington through freight No 77 and a southbound extra. The freight entered the switch onto the other track and collided with the oncoming train. No injuries were reported and a Grand Crossing wrecking crew cleared the line, forcing some trains to use the C M St Paul tracks.
In Pittsburg on September 6 a newborn faced tragedy as a lamp overturned during a birth scene. The grandmother Mrs. Matilda Till saved the infant by wrapping it in blankets as flames swept the home. Both mother and grandmother Mrs. Jesse Till were badly injured and not expected to recover.
Washington, Sept 6. The government officially admits plans to extensively improve fortifications in the Philippines. The fleet’s Pacific voyage is declared not a trial but the start of a fixed policy to establish fortifications and naval forces ready for any international crisis.
In Beverda Russia on September 6 the manager of Beverda coal was shot and killed amid terror. Police report no motive yet and say investigators are examining the case as a possible terror act.
Commissioner of Labor Neil arrives in New York amid strong rumors that he carries presidential orders to end the telegraphers strike. The tie-up cripples business as appeals to the president accumulate, with editorials across several papers weighing in on the dispute.
Senator Borah faces trial starting September 23 on charges of conspiring to defraud the federal government by securing illegal entry of timberlands. Denver lawyer B M C Burch will prosecute, with S R Rush of Omaha as special assistant attorney general. Indictment returned last April by the federal grand jury names Borah and other prominent men.
Representative John J. Esch states he is not a candidate for governor and the use of his name in a proposed gubernatorial ticket was unauthorized. He was away on a trip with a subcommittee inspecting Great Lakes lights when the ticket appeared. Esch says he will run for Congress next fall and that the name usage occurred without his knowledge or consent.
The indictment names J T Barber Sumner G Moon stockholders in Barber Lumber of Wisconsin and others including J N Wells P H Downs John Kincaid L M Pritchard William Sweet Albert M Palmer and H S Rand. They allegedly conspired in 1901 and later to obtain Boise county timber lands by fraud. Senator Borah later led the state in the Haywood murder trial.
Rushford and Spring Grove send word of special trains for the Interstate fair with assistants named Sherbie Becker sought as a speaker for good roads and growth. The city of La Crosse may host the boy mayor this fall, date to be set by him. Existing excursions from Rushford and Spring Grove plan a Sept 25 visit amid fair events. Assistant appointments cover art needlework and culinary departments as Sans Souci park discusses bringing Chicago shows for the week.
English actor William Faversham arrived late, missing the title role in Squaw Man in La Crosse. He learned the company moved ahead a week, forcing a rapid western dash from New York to join in Chicago and continue to Duluth. He was exhausted but determined to begin tonight.
The La Crosse Manufacturers' and Jobbers' Union will discuss raising freight rates from twenty-five to forty cents by Wisconsin railroads at a special meeting tomorrow. Local shippers expect protests to the state railroad and rate commission, with many opposing the increase.
The regular annual business meeting of the Young People's society at West Avenue Lutheran church will be held this evening in the church parlors at the corner of West Avenue and Division Streets. Officers will be elected and other important matters discussed. A social session with refreshments follows. all are invited.
The funeral for Mrs. A. L. Hollenbeck formerly Miss Mayme Roberts of La Crosse will be at 1230 South Eighth Street Sunday at 3 PM with Rev. Henry Faville officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove cemetery.

Hastings pitched today, Flynn and Hawley likely to start tomorrow, while Baillies recovers from a leg abscess and Sun Jones risks further injury. William McCormick, a Chicago outfielder, was recently signed and expected to arrive by noon.
In Shelton Washington eight people jumped to their deaths from the Webb hotel upper story as a wall of flame blocked stairways. Three others perished in the blaze and authorities fear more victims amid unrecorded guests.
Peru Ind Sept 6 Two sections of a Chicago Cincinnati and Louisville freight collided at Los Antville. Conductor Ira Straight was killed and several trainmen injured.
Pittsburg September 6 Peter Boyle aged 35 killed his wife and himself today. He left a note saying my wife has been no wife to me so here goes. She is a hypocrite and all her family.
Peter Amundson a former La Crosse Plow employee was found dead near Minot North Dakota last Saturday his death ruled suicide by drowning in a shallow pond. His ex wife Mrs D F O Brien says divorce two years ago and her remarriage sparked the despondency she suspects foul play. Amundson visited here after the divorce and left La Crosse the week before his death. His brother Matt Amundson takes charge of the body in Minot. funeral planned there. He leaves four children with Mrs O Brien.
Washington gossip reports President Roosevelt planning a personal peace conference with the five Central American republics. Foreign ministers consider venue and delegation numbers as ambassadors from France Germany Britain back the effort. The plan reportedly includes broader global issues beyond Central America such as China KoreaDrago and Monroe doctrines.
The First battalion of the Thirteenth United States cavalry reached Fort Sheridan Illinois after marching from Fort Riley Kansas. Privates suffered from hardships and some officers objected to strict discipline, with reports of near mutiny. More details may follow.
Albany Sept. 6. Attorney General Jackson filed to block the American Ice company known as the ice trust from doing business in the state charging illegal contracts in restraint of competition.
At 3 o'clock this afternoon two men were arrested by officers and are held at the police station awaiting developments. No specific charge has been filed, according to the police.
At a meeting tonight the Vote-Berger company directors are expected to let the contract for their new factory on the North side.
A Paris report says detectives uncovered a plot to assassinate King Edward VII during his water cure visit to Marienbad. Extra guards ordered after the warning, but the king appeared unconcerned as officials treated the claim as serious.
Santiago Chile September 6 A great force of rescuers works to dig out fifty people buried by an avalanche that swept the Chilean customs house at Juncal on the Argentine frontier. The slide was large and victims are deeply buried with little hope of rescue.
Forecasts show showers tonight or Saturday across Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa with warmer temperatures in eastern and central areas. River stages are expected to remain nearly stationary over the next 36 hours with water levels noted for today.
