The National Production Authority proposes a tentative plan to cut non military use of aluminum copper and nickel by 20 to 40 percent. cobalt may be removed from non defense use. impact on consumer goods depends on substitutes and firm supplied form limits.
A Pacific coast storm battered the Northwest with up to 75 mph winds, heavy rain and flooding. One person died and scores injured as trees toppled, power lines failed, and ships in San Francisco Bay faced trouble. Communications outages occurred in several California towns as the system moved north along the coast.
A price battle in Superior Wisconsin sees bakers raising bread by one cent and grocers adding another two cents total. Dairy farmers demand a two cent per quart increase as creamery payments drop from 11 to 8 cents per quart over two years. Gordon R. Johnson, 20, missing in action since Sept. 15, is reported killed in Korea. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Gust Johnson of Merrillan, he was born July 19, 1930, and entered service at 17. Survived by parents two sisters and two brothers. He had been stationed at Fort Meade Fort Lee and Camp Stoneman before going to Korea.
La Crosse County officials announced there will be no pre induction physical exams for men from the county in November. They stressed that induction of county men will take place late in November.
La Crosse county Red Cross blood program seeks two O negative donors for a direct transfusion in a rare case at Lutheran hospital. Three donors have already provided blood from Electric Auto-Lite, Trane Co., and Allis-Chalmers. A fourth donor is needed for Saturday and a standby for Monday. contact Lutheran hospital to help.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization seeks a unified Western Europe defense force headed by an American supreme commander within two months. NATO military chiefs propose an integrated force for the treaty area, a European force, a supreme headquarters, and a supreme commander with indications a European nucleus could start by January.

The Vatican announces the most extensive radio hookup ever for the Assumption dogma ceremony to be broadcast worldwide. The event marks the first time in church history a ceremony is transmitted by radio with possible televised parts for France.
