The Wisconsin Supreme Court will announce Monday if it will take jurisdiction in a test case over the governor’s power to appoint state officials. In Friday arguments, lawyers for both sides urged the court to rule on laws governing a governor appointments dispute between Gov. John W. Reynolds and the State Senate.
Wisconsin politics center on Governor Reynolds appointing about 70 new officials while the Senate stays Republican controlled and undecided on confirmations. Atty. Gen. Thompson asks for court orders to steady state government as disputes over the state auditor and conservation commissioners linger.
Nolan Mack a 38 year old narcotics peddler died after a gun battle with federal agents at the Northwest Expressway Chicago following a 10 mile pursuit from the Dan Ryan Expressway. Agent Gale Ruhl was wounded in the forehead but listed in good condition. Mack reputedly the most feared man on the South Side and investigations into his narcotics and gambling activities were hindered by informants' fear.
Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara ordered immediate start on a conventional powered carrier for CVA 67. He cited delaying costs and urged speed, ending the Navy's nuclear option for the vessel.
Tran Le Chi, Ngo Dinh Nhu’s sister, criticizes South Viet Nam first lady for political meddling on the Diem election anniversary. She calls for Nhu to quit politics, warns of harm to Catholics and Viet Nam, and says Buddhists burn themselves in protest due to injustice.
A Shelby man, Robert O. Heller, 33, was killed when his pickup left Highway MM near his home and rolled over. His fellow worker, David J. Elsen, 23, sustained a possible shoulder fracture and is listed in good condition. Heller left behind a wife and three children.
A three alarm blaze in Milwaukee destroyed a three story brick warehouse on Commission Row near Wisconsin Avenue. Flames shot high, smoke covered four blocks. two firefighters were injured lightly as interior of the 60 by 120 foot building burned out. The empty facility stored bananas and boxes.
Edward J Canavan stated the fire scene should cool tonight and Sunday with a steady drop in temperature. Tonight will see lows around the mid 40s and Sunday tops near the mid 60s as conditions ease.
The FDA issued an emergency advisory urging homemakers to discard smoked fish from the Great Lakes area or processed there due to botulism risk after seven deaths linked to smoked whitefish and chubs. A Wisconsin health official said there were no illnesses in the state from the products.
A five year old girl reportedly blonde was found alive in a roadside ditch near Lansing Michigan after being missing about 12 hours. She had been held against her mother’s will in a car at a shopping center. The rescue followed a trucker’s sighting Friday night.

President Kennedy's aircraft circled Westover Air Force Base for over an hour before landing due to thick ground fog. He then flew by Marine helicopter to Amherst to receive an honorary degree and honor poet Robert Frost with ceremonies.
New York AP report states Gov George Romney of Michigan will not seek the Republican presidential nomination next year and says the declaration is sincere not a pose.
Eleven years after planning began, 19 residents of the La Crosse Home for Children moved into a newly built house at 26th and Weston Streets. Staff and youths aided the move, celebrated with a picnic, and settled into the modern kitchen and bedrooms as renovations continued on the old building.
Milwaukee AP reports the Wisconsin State Bar plans a poll of its 5000 members on David Rabinovitz's qualifications for the U S District Court Western District of Wisconsin. ABA official Robert Meserve notes such polls are uncommon before Senate action but not prohibited. Rabinovitz, a Kennedy appointee hopeful and Democratic national committeeman from Sheboygan, faces Senate review.
Sharon L. Riess, 18, of Watertown, died early today after being struck by a car on Highway 19 about three miles west of Watertown. The driver was not held as Wisconsin’s 1963 highway toll rose to 715.
