Mobile rescuers search the wreckage after a Mobile and Ohio troop train plunged from a Buckatunna Mississippi trestle killing twenty three troopers and two trainmen and injuring about one hundred soldiers. Seventeen bodies from Companies 39 and 170 U S coast artillery were brought to Mobile with thirty five injured. Officers Frank Gerre F Barlow Robert Campbell among the injured. The tender jumped the track near the trestle end causing the disaster.
Washington officials announced an immediate investigation by the Interstate Commerce Commission into the troop train wreck on the Mobile and Ohio railroad. No injuries or causes were specified in the brief statement.
Engineer Newell of the Grand Trunk lines is jailed after a steam jet scalded 14 year old Cornelius Regan. Regan lies in a hospital with injuries believed to be fatal. Police say the blast was aimed at the boy for fun while he stood beside the engine.
L 18 year old George Burie, son of the Fond du Lac county fair board president, was shot and seriously wounded early today by hunter George Laring. The full charge of bird shot lodged in the boy's leg.
Fred Schmeckpepper of 2007 West Avenue South lay in the muddy riverbank from Sunday night to Monday morning with a broken leg and multiple ribs after a fast passenger train plunged him from the Northwestern trestle near the La Crosse depot. He was found unconscious, in great pain, and later transported by work train to Lutheran hospital where doctors said he would live.
Mrs. Pearl B. Smith secured a divorce in Chicago as she testified Judge Baldwin that one cruelty cited was her husband pulling the bed covers off on cold winter nights.
Washington Oct 20 A bid by Majority Leader Underwood to adjourn the House for 30 days pending Senate currency action failed when Minority Leader Mann refused to agree though he would consider the measure. With 134 members present the House adjourned until tomorrow after Underwood presented a letter from President Wilson. The president said he expected a Senate report on the bill in early November and that passage would follow within two to three weeks.
A street car crash freed one tiger and eight lions in Leipzig at midnight. Police and troops hunted the animals. six lions were killed and two assaulted people before dawn. The tiger was recaptured by a female trainer. Two lions at the Blucher hotel caused chaos before dawn.
