US Representative Alvin Baldus of Menomonie will not appear on WKBT Channel 8 for the October 20 debate citing dissatisfaction with the format. His campaign manager says Baldus has refused to debate and violated the spirit of debates. A Wednesday Eau Claire broadcast from Schofield Hall remains scheduled, open to the public and televised.
Two deputies Mark Hess and Terry L. Malszycki resigned citing morale and financial issues in the department. Sheriff William Black disputes morale problems, attributing departures to pay levels of starting deputies and concerns about the recent reorganization that shifts patrol duties to traffic police.
Madison attorney Amedeo Greco asks Wisconsin Supreme Court to investigate the State Bar of Wisconsin practices finances and needs in response to a proposed 150 percent dues hike from 40 to 100 dollars per year. A guard asked him and a radio reporter to leave. after police talks Baldus departed. Baldus aides say no printed materials were distributed and Baldus only shook hands. He seeks a copy of the store rule to challenge it.
Joseph Arneson and Susan Geary receive swine flu shots as the city opens inoculation clinics at City Hall. Officials report about 100 people vaccinated by 11 a.m. and 300 waiting, with sessions planned 1 to 4 p.m. Affected sites include St Joseph Ridge and St Peter Catholic churches with additional clinics at City Hall and senior centers on Oct 18 22 26 and 28.
Whitehall Packing Co. completed a 3.3 million expansion as part of a growth plan financed by two municipal revenue bonds. The project supports a 2 million sewage plant and aims to boost local employment from 400 to about 550 production workers plus 100 other staff. The firm, parent Meilman Industries, bought a Sioux Falls beef plant in 1972 and now sells meat via wholesale and retail outlets to reduce middlemen, while facing housing and commute challenges for workers in the Whitehall area.

A lawsuit filed in Circuit Court sought foreclosure on a 100 acre Middleton land contract and named Gov Patrick Lucey, his wife Jean, and Mr and Mrs Richard Welch. The parties reached a dismissal agreement after payments were reportedly made. trustees say the women were improperly joined.
