Washington May 26 J C Welliver A Struggling Session. Camden N J May 26 The battleship Michigan was launched at 11 o clock today at the New York Ship Building company yards. Miss Carol Newberry christened the vessel in front of 250 sailors 150 Marines and a Washington delegation. Michigan is an all big gun ship of about 16000 tons with eight 12 inch guns two submerged torpedo tubes and a 22 gun secondary battery. She will house 51 officers 818 men and cost about 3585000 dollars before armament.
Washington May 26 W J Bryan sent Taft a wire inviting joint action to urge Congress to pass a bill requiring publicity of campaign expenses. Taft replied from the White House noting his April 30 letter to Senator Burrows in favor of making political contributions and expenditures public. Both leaders indicate hope the measure becomes law to curb corruption in national politics.
The Mayoralty recount fight between Hearst and McClellan is resolved as Supreme Court Justice Lambert overrules McClellan counsel and orders ballot boxes opened for recount. The May contest centers on alleged ballot box stuffing and will proceed to settle the dispute.
In Clinton Illinois on May 26 the court heard that Mabelle Snell McNamara may testify about letters to the late Col. Thomas Snell. Witnesses described Snell’s contempt for women and claims of spending $1,000 daily on mistresses, with letters read only if and when allowed. Secret society women and wary husbands filled the courtroom as the dispute progressed.
Franklin Pierce, counsel for petitioners seeking William Travers Jerome's removal as New York district attorney, charges his conduct as “disgraceful” and warns the continuation of Jerome in office would bring untold evil. Arguments open before commissioner R. J. Hand. Jerome to file brief after Pierce finishes.
In Philadelphia on May 26 Rev. Wilbur F. Crafts, general secretary of the International Reform Association, denounced Speaker Cannon before the Methodist Preachers’ association. He contrasted him with Speaker Reed, declaring Cannon’s manners the lowest and quipping that a pig would be chosen as a mascot for a man who rises to the top in Congress.
La Crosse Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota residents reported a great white rainbow across the sky last night. The luminous streamer resembled phosphorescent smoke, sometimes colored, with Venus nearly in line at its western end. Observers noted it high above with clouds passing beneath, and some claimed motion when tested from buildings. The Tribune received multiple calls from worried readers asking what it was as reports spread across the region.
London May 26 President Fallaires of France massed support from thousands as he toured the Franco British exhibition with King Edward and Queen. The aging monarchs led a fast pace for younger elites, while Fallaires connected with the crowd in a democratic display that drew broad cheers.
A dispatch from Pekin reports 5,000 Chinese troops from Kierin moving to seize Tschentao near the China Korea border. The unit, trained with foreign drills, is backed by a strong navy contingent. New York May 26 The Clyde line steamer Seminole from Santo Domingo City and other West Indian ports is reported ashore near Point Pleasant New Jersey.
Jerome resists removal from Mattewan and fears of return to the asylum upset Edwin Thaw. He instructed counsel to appeal to the highest court if Jerome would not settle. Evelyn Thaw's attorney moved to withdraw Evelyn's suit to annul marriage to Thaw without explanation.
Marion Grey, serving one year for running a matrimonial agency in Elgin, seeks to remarry her first husband Milo Piper. In Chicago, in Judge Landis' court, an attorney urged bail reduction or sentence remission so the couple could wed again. Landis refused.
In Washington on May 26 a printed notice from the Whip informed every Republican member to be in his seat as the currency bill was likely to be taken up. Report says House and Senate conferees met and would likely agree on the measure today or tomorrow.
In Cleveland on May 26 the Municipal Traction strike vote favored continuing the stand. About 900 strikers met and nearly all supported the decision to halt further arbitration. The employer in a separate move refused to cede seniority rights to arbitration. Roughly 300 strikers have returned to work and operations near normal.
Tax authorities order doubling of taxes on the La Crosse street car lines. Hearings are set for June to review the decision. Companies affected will have a chance to present their objections and show any errors in the levy.
The state tax commission released preliminary valuations for public service companies. La Crosse City Street Railway property is valued at 500000 dollars, with taxes rising to 5755 dollars this year from 2483.44 last year. Onalaska Street Railway pays 218.18 up from 146.45. Madison city license tax rose to 3855.17, with total statewide tax projections up by about 7769.25 dollars if sustained.
