Austrians celebrate freedom as treaty is signed

Vienna and other Austrian cities erupted in joy as the Big Four signed a treaty restoring Austria as a sovereign state after 17 years of occupation. The pact allows a national army, no foreign bases, and UN membership, with Russia owed reparations and oil commitments.

Mrs Terpstra of Midway District Dies After Brief Illness

Myrtle Terpstra 68 of Midway wife of Owner Terpstra and Onalaska official died Monday in a local hospital after a short illness. Born March 16 1887 in La Crosse County she was active in many community groups. Funeral Wednesday 2 pm at Onalaska Methodist Church with burial in Brice Prairie Cemetery. Graveside rites by Eastern Star 249 Onalaska. Burial at Dickin g son Funeral Home after 3 pm Tuesday and at church Wednesday from 1 pm. Survived by husband six children two daughters Kathryn Burback Onalaska Jessie Kaiser La Crosse Marion Hauser West Salem sons Donald La Crosse Friend West Salem two sisters four brothers twelve grandchildren five great grandchildren. She belonged to Easter Star 249 Onalaska Women’s Society of Christian Service Brice Prairie Cemetery Assn Homemakers clubs and other local groups.

Passenger Dies In Bus Car Crash Near Oxnard

A passenger car and a Greyhound bus collided last night 44 miles east of Oxnard California killing one person and injuring 12. The car driver Jess V Meraz 43 Santa Paula was dead on arrival at a hospital. Injured include Meraz wife Petra and two daughters Mary and Helen three other children in the car bus driver Chester Green South Gate and five women bus passengers.

Couple Found Slain in Alton Ditch

The bodies of Dorothy Ray Browder and Joe Greene, both Black, were found in a ditch in Alton. Each had been shot three times with a .52-caliber pistol. no weapon was recovered. Browder was 20, a Sunday school teacher, Greene a foundry worker.
