Washington officials reexamine this week’s Soviet peace contest seeking whether talks can ease Cold War tensions. Analysts say the Kremlin may be testing issues while public debate rises over whether an American proposal existed, leaving the door for talks ajar despite mixed signals.

Oregon also chooses state ticket and candidates for U S senate and house. Saturday Nevada Democrats name 10 delegates, Utah Republicans 11.
A ghostly SOS claimed a sinking coastwise ship after an explosion but search efforts by the coast guard and air force 35 miles offshore from Crescent City failed to locate any vessel. The garbled message read sinking fast struck mine and listed KHIC as the call letters for the Liberty ship William, though the Channing remains in reserve in the Columbia River.
Gov Luther Youngdahl told striking workers in South St Paul that you cannot win a strike by anarchy or violence. National Guard cleared routes for strike bound Swift and Company vehicles as about 500 pickets gathered around Concord Street and Grand Avenue. NEW YORK stock market saw its heaviest trading in 15 years on Saturday as a bullish mood spread after Friday's surge. Early gains reached about seven dollars, with many large blocks exchanging hands including 21 000 Packard shares and 20 000 Tricontinental. Volume totaled 2 590 000 shares, a Saturday high since July 22, 1933, as 1 067 issues moved, 740 rising and 175 falling, with curb activity led by Aluminum Ltd and several others while Cities Service and American Gas lagged.
In Shamokin Pennsylvania two miners Edward Heck aged 42 and Peter Gorton aged 35 were rescued after 60 hours trapped in a 175 foot deep flooded coal shaft. Their companion is presumed dead. They were brought to Shamokin state hospital exhausted but unharmed.
London report notes the first draft bill to nationalize Britain's steel industry is finished and expected to be introduced at the next parliamentary session opening early in October.

Washington reports a pivotal Oregon primary next Friday pitting Gov. Thomas E. Dewey against Harold E. Stassen. The outcome shapes delegate math toward the July nominating convention in Philadelphia where 548 are needed.
Pueblo police warn young men to avoid walking alone at night after two women allegedly accosted Albert Garillo in an alley and attempted to force affection. Garillo reported losing three dollars during the encounter as the assailants fled into the confusion.
