Alfalfa Tour Plans in La Crosse County Campaign

The La Crosse county agricultural school promotes a county wide autos tour to advocate planting alfalfa under the slogan Alfalfa on Every Farm in La Crosse County. Principal Frank Balmer announced strong local interest with a May 66 excursion starting at 9:00 a.m. from Market Square La Crosse. Farmers will visit successful fields to learn methods and best practices for stand establishment soil preparation liming manure inoculation and more to boost dairying and livestock interests.

Colored minister gets year in pen

Rev. Henry B. Alexander, the colored pastor, was sentenced to one year in the penitentiary at Waupun by Judge Higbee for soliciting money under false pretenses for a colored divinity and industrial school. John Kelley received the same sentence for larceny from the person after being caught rifling a sleeping man's pockets in a Corcoran saloon.

The April vital statistics from La Crosse show more than double births to deaths with thirty-five marriages, eighty-two births and forty deaths recorded. Register of Deeds Andrew Thompson released the monthly statement today.

Bicycle rider fined for sidewalk on city court row

Charles Maxwell pleaded guilty to riding a bicycle on a sidewalk and was fined 3.50 by Judge Edward Cronon in municipal court. Charles McDonald received a 12.50 fine for disorderly conduct in the same session.

In Washington on May 16 the senate rejected Penrose and La Follette amendments to require public hearings on the Wilson Underwood tariff bill by a 36 to 41 vote.
