John Strohm reports from Southeast Asia after a 10 week visit to nine countries and talks with diplomats officials business leaders soldiers and Gen Douglas MacArthur. He previews six dispatches outlining Cold War dangers and a long path to salvation and stability.
A capacity crowd gathered at C. K. Preus auditorium in Decorah as Luther College dedicated Brandt Hall, a modern four story women’s dormitory. The program featured music by the Luther College Women’s Chorus and remarks honoring Diderikke Brandt’s role in advancing coeducation.
Fair and cooler tonight with a low around 40 in the city and light frost possible in deep valleys. Tuesday brings fair skies, warmer temperatures, and a high near 72.
President Harry Truman greeted a crowd of more than 1500 at Elroy Wisconsin on Mother's Day morning during a brief stop in his campaign tour. County Democratic officials and local high school bands welcomed him as he paused the presidential train at 840 am and he said he wished everyone a happy Mother's Day and urged church attendance.
William John Krase 30, an inspector at Camp Williams, died when his two seater plane plummeted near Alder lake six miles east of Camp McCoy Sunday about 6 30 p m after witnesses saw him performing aerial stunts. The crash occurred in the Camp McCoy military reservation.
Patrolman John William Rooney 59 of the city police department died of a heart attack about 10 p m Sunday. A 24 year veteran he served 1919 1920 and 1926 his burial set for Wednesday at Oak Grove cemetery with Masonic rites. He resided at 217 North 11th street leaving a wife Ma bel a son John Henry and two daughters Ruth Erickson and Margie Rupard along with two sisters Katherine Arenz and Nick Weber. He belonged to the Policemen Protective association Municipal Employes Credit union Veterans of Foreign Wars Frontier Lodge 45 F and A M and will be honored with services at his home Tuesday and grave Masonic rites.
Rep Gardner R Withrow of La Crosse, Republican, announced his candidacy for re election to congress. A four term veteran who served 1930 1939 and was elected again in 1948, he pledges a platform of economy and efficiency in federal government. He cautions that continued large foreign expenditures threaten U S domestic agriculture and rural programs including electrification and soil conservation.
Istanbul reports claim President Ismet Inonu’s government is buried under a landslide of opposition votes amid widespread backlash over economic problems.
President Truman ends a 16 state six thousand mile western tour with a major speech at Chicago Jefferson Jubilee pageant. He arrives from Madison and attends a three day national Democratic conference at the Blackstone hotel. Thousands watch a torchlight welcome and a 9 30 p m CST stadium speech broadcast by NBC television and radio.
Anna Sarah Katz 61 a La Crosse native for forty years died in a Rochester Minnesota hospital after a three month illness. Born July 15 1889 in Ponebezys Lithuania to Yosef Moishe and Shula Dvorak Scho chett she spent youth in Russia and England arriving in the United States in 1906. She lived in La Crosse until 1946 then moved to Milwaukee and often visited this city. A devout Orthodox Jewish woman she supported many charities and groups including Hadassah ORT Federated Council of Jewish Women Lighthouse for the Blind and Milwaukee Home for Aged Jews. Her main interests were religious and philanthropic activities.
The health department urged north side residents and Onalaska to cut water use due to overloaded sewers. Sewage overflow has affected La Crosse and entered storm sewers, creating a health hazard per city health officer Dr. Garland Weidner. Mayor I H Pertsch asked residents to conserve water for essentials.
Fifty three year old Bert Delmar Conklin Jr was seriously hurt when his bicycle collided with a taxi at State and Seventh streets. He suffered a broken left shoulder with possible skull fracture and internal injuries. The taxi driver Vernon Hustad reported speeds of 15 to 18 mph as he traveled east on State. The impact caused damage to the cab and bicycle and the rider was taken to a local hospital.
MADISON Wis A long term lease is proposed by the State Historical Society to operate Villa Louis at Prairie du Chien replacing an outright deed. Dr Clifford Lord society director said the offer seeks to resolve the impasse caused by Mayor William D Carroll who refuses to sign final deeds. Carroll says city cannot legally turn over title. Repairs and development are stalled awaiting a settlement.
An attempted jailbreak at 9 p m Sunday failed when a trusty blocked the escapees at the foot of a stairs. Jailer Leske was knocked by John Kolacinski and tussled with him. Robert Blackstone and Guy Hansen chased prisoners as they fled. Leske later closed the outer gates after the fracas leaving several injured.
Assemblyman Patrick J. Lucey announced Monday his bid for the Democratic nomination in Wisconsin's third district. He argued for the Truman Fair Deal as the path to a peaceful prosperous America, warned against isolationist forces, and urged electing a cooperative Congress to avoid stalemate.
Coast guardsmen continued dragging Lake Michigan Monday for traces of a four place plane that plunged Saturday after taking off from Meigs Field. Albert J. Wachowski of Flint Michigan, a real estate dealer, was identified by a briefcase found Saturday, and a portion of the craft’s aileron was recovered Sunday as searches continued off Diversey Parkway.
Two Sparta high school students investigated after a plane went into a spin and found the wreckage. Krase had lived in Tomah and worked at Camp Williams in Juneau County. Eye witnesses were Willi.
