In Boise Idaho on May 9 William K Haywood enters the courtroom with his wife present as the district judge calls the sheriff to bring in the prisoner for the famed governor Steunenberg murder trial. Haywood walks with a steady gait and a boyish light step, showing no evident guilt.
The prisoner sat at the head of the counsel table dressed in a dark suit with a white collar and black tie. His calm bearing and neat attire mark him as a powerful leader among his peers during the trial. His wife attended, sitting nearby to show support.
A crowded courtroom saw the Eder family among spectators as Attorney Borah disputed immunity for Jack Simpkins in the Haywood principal case. He pledged to locate and convict him, with a state witness list shown and more may be called later. Four venicemen were excused for conflicts or lack of assistance.
Judge Ray S. Reid of La Crosse tells the Wisconsin senate state affairs committee that railroads block river transportation plans. President Plantz of Lawrence University and other leaders joined in decrying the desecration, as Robinsons circus was booked for Memorial Day in the city.
A Burlington suburban train crash in Chicago this morning killed Mrs. Mary B. Miller of Riverside and Lucy Hayes, a colored woman, as the car derailed and fire swept the wreckage. Assistant U S district attorney Childs and his wife were injured. flames were extinguished by the fire department.
Rev. D. M. Carpenter aged 55 resigns after thirty years as pastor of Holiness Church Harrington Pa admitting love for Della Goodrich 32. The scandal surfaced when a letter he wrote for Della reached the recorder of deeds by error and was shown to church officers.
In an automobile accident on Main street westbound C W Moore struck a buggy traveling north on Seventh. The buggy occupants said they had no warning and saw the machine too late to avoid the crash. No injuries and only minor damage to both vehicles reported.
Nell notes Jack is energetic and always stirring. Belle calls him spoony, sharing a lighthearted moment about his antics.
A 47 page committee bill advances in the assembly to regulate railroads, telephone, power, light, heat and water firms with a rate commission. It emphasizes actual working property for valuation, keeps city councils influential, and promises annual plant cost reporting and a court hearing for utilities.
In circuit court Dr. John Heyerdahl was convicted of stealing a sealskin coat a comb and a hair brush from Luella Johnson. Hairs from the brush matched hairs from the complainant’s head leading to a sealed guilty verdict after the defense had argued the brush belonged to the defendant.
The tally shows Stephenson leading with 28 votes followed by Esch 21 Hatten 22 Bird 19 and others scattered. Absent six. The assembly debated dam removal near Long Lake and power from Eau Claire with farmer concerns about flooding.

Street-level factions debate coalitions as Cooper Lenroot and Hatten supporters shift positions and Democratic hopes hinge on a pivotal caucus vote.
Two bids were opened for improving the east approach of the wagon bridge. Both bids exceeded the $1 081 city engineer estimate and were referred to the council. La Crosse Stone offered 1380 and La Crosse Bridge & Steel 1410. Also, Miss Josephine Koenig announced the death of her uncle G Burghart of Chicago formerly of La Crosse.
In Lafayette Indiana on May 9, Mrs. Alice Cooper Lawson was found guilty this morning of murder for shooting her husband in his saloon. The case proceeded in a secretary court with jurors delivering the verdict after deliberation.
