Janesville Wisconsin May 8 Swanshilda Gunness 13, daughter of Phillip Gunness by his first wife, is hidden on a farm near Janesville after being kidnapped by Gus Gunness, her uncle. He says the widow refused to release her and he will pursue a legal claim to the estate in Laporte Indiana.
In La Porte Indiana on May 8 a skeleton, the tenth unearthed since Tuesday, was found at the Gunness farm after the search resumed. Sex of the victim could not be determined.
A LaPorte sheriff reports another mass of bones in a grave, likely two bodies, with one skeleton in a wooden box and burned shoe fragments. Decomposition prevents sure counts as diggers uncover several depressions beyond a dozen opened. Mentions Myrtle Gunness and alleged abuse by her mother.
A massive morning blaze in downtown Atlanta gutted a block and a half of major business buildings, wrecking fifty structures and causing about 1.5 million dollars in losses. S. M. Inman suffered the heaviest hit as owner of most burned properties. The Schlesinger and Baker building sparked the fire, water pressure failed at a critical moment, guests at the Terminal hotel escaped safely, and no casualties were reported.
Cleveland May 8 The street car men s union and Municipal Traction Company broke off negotiations this afternoon after a week of talks Vice President Behner of the international organization called a meeting for tonight to decide on a strike dispute They could not agree on arbitration demands urged by Mayor Johnson
In Philadelphia area a band of six yeggmen blew a post office safe at Lianerch early today and looted about $200. A running engagement with pursuing officers followed with many shots fired. One captured robber named Harry Kelly. Another bandit was shot and badly injured. the post office and building were wrecked.
Secretary Metcalf reviewed the combined Atlantic and Pacific fleets from the Yorktown in San Francisco as forty four ships formed four lines. The ceremony marked the end of Admiral Evans known as Fighting Bob whose flag was lowered aboard the Connecticut and who will retire in August. Rear Admiral Thomas assumes command and will be succeeded by Sperry on May 14 during the around the world voyage.
Madison Wis May 8 The supreme court today affirmed the case of Louis Beach vs Bird Wells Lumber Co Beach an engineer on the lumber road lost a foot when the engine handle broke and was replaced by a flimsy wire He warned the road superintendent but nothing was done beyond a promise Beach was awarded 20000 later reduced to 5600 the company appealed The court reversed the Schroeder Lumber case involving 16 horses shipped to Ashland where several suffocated and a verdict of 1000 was set aside by the railroad
Washington mass is told that the pork barrel omnibus public building bill will not be discussed on the floor until party leaders whip the hesitant members into line and settle a non filibusterable plan. The currency bill must be decided first, pushing the public building bill to next week. Republicans intend to frame a rule with little threat of Democratic opposition.
Pittsburg May 8 National Bank Examiner Folds reports the embezzlement at Allegheny National Bank. Cashier William Montgomery was arrested on charges of misappropriating $469,000. Bank remains open. examiner reportedly watches two more institutions. Montgomery is described as a favored friend of Senator Quay.
The Masons and their wives will attend a lodge party next Tuesday at the Masonic temple. Featured act by Mr. W S Meiklejohn will entertain with magic and mystery, followed by refreshments for members and their wives.
New York May 8 The district attorney Jerome testified in the Kings county case that he gambled for a dollar a throw and drank with two sons of Thomas F Ryan at a restaurant near the criminal courts building while Delmas was closing the first Thaw trial. It was shown that Francis Garvan, Jerome’s chief aide, is related by marriage to Anthony N Brady. Garvan’s sister married Brady’s son. Ryan and Brady are key figures in New York City traction deals the case alleges Jerome failed to properly probe amid large swing deals.
East Port Long Island May 8 Seventy three sailors from the German four masted vessel Peter Rickmers were rescued after 24 hours in a raging sea. The ship is breaking up and a crew member is missing believed washed away. Small boats and wreckage were seen along the coast as calm subsided enough for the rescue.
A petition from the La Crosse Motorboat Club led by Commodore John C Toeller and secretary treasurer W V Kidder asks the city council to establish a fifty foot floating dock on the river front north side. The project aims to ease landings for fifty plus motorboats and launches, with construction expected to start this season at an estimated cost under 90 dollars, improving access for north side residents.
At a public works board meeting this afternoon an agreement was reached to install all water meters in the future. Previously plumbers installed the meters and charged owners, but the board decided to undertake the work themselves.
The trial of E Groff and W S Cargill on speed law violations from an auto race on Cass Street was adjourned due to their absence. No new hearing date was set.
Wisconsin supreme court hears suit by L B Dresser father of Hazel and Mabel Dresser against St Croix Falls high school district over a ten stanza verse the school found objectionable. The action seeks reinstatement after expulsion for the two girls aged 15 and 17 and the case centers on whether the verses amount to grounds for expulsion.
Pearl Taylor, 17, died after an April 28 attack at the Taylor home in Minden Nebraska. Bert M Taylor, her brother in law, is accused and a $1700 reward is offered. Bloodhounds and autos pursued him, but he fled to Kansas. A coroner's inquest is set. The assailant beat Pearl and her two sisters, poured kerosene on them, and set the house on fire.
In Marietta Ohio on May 8 a blaze gutted the Washington county infirmary. About two hundred inmates panicked as flames began in the basement. Superintendent Joseph Young was fatally burned, doctors fear, following an explosion in the laundry. Physicians and nurses arrived from Marietta to aid.
Washington May 8. The house committee on elections has ruled two Illinois representatives duly seated. Adolf J Sabath Democrat from the Fifth Illinois district and Charles Mc Davin Republican from the Eighth district are confirmed as members after contested elections. Stanley Y Kunz is mentioned in connection with the case.
Miss Marie Smith, 26, sues Chicago advertising magnate Robert J. Gunning in municipal court for breach of promise of marriage and $100,000 damages. She alleges he proposed four years ago when she was 22 and received her promise to marry him.
Madison Wis May Three major supreme court cases to test Wisconsin power to regulate corporations and delegation of authority will be heard. The Soo case against the railroad commission questions the commission’s validity and scope. Milwaukee Electric Railway Light faces franchise validity from 1900 and potential fraud in permit grants. Only one bid was received by the board of public works for the Riverside park project. Wooly and Hanson submitted a bid of 1578 dollars, which is 387 dollars over the estimate and the board will refer it to the council since it cannot authorize bids above the estimate.
The horse Rhode, owned by M Richard Croker, won the 1,000 guineas field at Newmarket, beating an eighteen-horse field. The result shows Croker's entry defeating rivals at a 190 to and against Rhode in the close finish.
