Police pursue new leads as Gunness case shifts to Chicago and New York. A century-old home in Austin is reportedly to be dug up, while authorities vet tips about the killer’s associates and possible MBs. In La Porte Indiana May 7 deputies found the lock pried off at the Gunness barn where exhumed bodies and evidence were kept. All bottles missing and bodies in confusion with a floor drag mark. Unconfirmed report says some bodies may have been stolen. Officials hint at possible accomplice or Mrs Gunness in vicinity.

In Poughkeepsie on May 7 Harry Thaw, jailed in Duchess County for habeas corpus, quarrels with undersheriff Townsend after being refused an auto ride. Harry Van Cleaf, Thaw cousin by marriage, prompted the dispute by suggesting the ride, with Townsend awaiting Justice Morschauser’s authority to release Thaw. Thaw vowed to see Morschauser before night.
A basement fire at No 10 Orchard Street New York causes four deaths and many injuries. The blaze, suspected incendiary, began near the air shaft. a small child perished on the grate. The article notes a continued effort to burn despite the blaze.
Baltimore, May 7. Methodist bishops urged uniform divorce laws with adultery as the sole ground, arguing current US laws foster polygamy and endanger family life.
