Melvin Evans of Taylor Missouri surveys his flooded 560 acre farm as levees break on April 24. With only ten acres free of water he plans to wait until July to plant, fearing the growing season will be lost.
The Mississippi River crests again today at Hannibal Missouri marking the 55th straight day of flooding. Areas from Illinois to Louisiana see improving conditions as the worst passes, with backwaters covering millions of acres hindering planting and recovery efforts.
Former White House aide Egil Bud Krogh admits supervising the burglary of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist. He signed an affidavit for the Pentagon papers trial in Los Angeles, with details about Nixon and Ehrlichman. Other Watergate developments follow on page 2.
The forecast calls for cloudy skies with a chance of showers or thunderstorms Saturday night and Sunday. Mild conditions continue Sunday with a low near 48 and a high near 70. Southeast winds 10 to 15 mph, becoming south Sunday. Precipitation chance 50 percent for Sat night and Sun. Monday shows partly cloudy skies and a shower chance with a high in the mid 40s.

The move followed President Nixon’s naming Army General Alexander Haig Jr. as interim staff coordinator after Haldeman’s resignation.
In Milwaukee AP Bush urged Republicans not to let Watergate cloud Nixon era gains. He said the United States has retained credibility and Nixon promoted regional responsibility and peacemaking in areas including the Middle East at a $100-a-plate fundraiser.
A Shawano County woman identified as Jane Doe and her physician sought a court order to force Berlin Memorial Hospital to perform an abortion. The Supreme Court refused to intervene, leaving district rulings and stays in place as questions about federal funds and court jurisdiction continued.
Rep. Vernon Thomson of Wisconsin seeks restoration of $3 million in federal funds for a new national fisheries research laboratory in La Crosse. He argues the lab is needed to continue testing TFM, the chemical used to control sea lamprey in the Great Lakes.
