Chicago reports expose Col M M Mulhall detailing a vast Washington lobby for the National Association of Manufacturers. He says the group, with ten billion dollars in capital and five million employees, paid lawmakers and funded campaigns. Names include ex Speakers and Senators. charges cover payments for services and blacklisting.
Indiana figures James E. Watson admits accepting money from the National Association of Manufacturers for lobbying during a 1909 tariff commission session. Senate lobby probe chair Overman orders Mulhall testimony and subpoenas as the committee probes Mulhall’s detailed narrative linking political power to industrial influence.
Heat wave claims two lives as the day’s high temperatures overwhelm residents. Eight others suffer heat-related illnesses, with authorities noting the extreme conditions eased only slightly by late afternoon. Weather officials promise relief as the heat subsides.

Dewey Smith, son of rail worker William Smith of Lytles, drowned in the Black River near Lytles Wisconsin after venturing too far from shore with two companions. The body was found on a sandbar hours later after a two hour search by railroad workers and locals. Local physicians pronounced life extinct. his parents were called to the scene.
Wenzel Breidel, 44, found hanged near Henry Rhode's saloon at Barre Mills. Coroner Langstadt rules death by own action. Breidel had endured grief over his wife’s drowning five years earlier and reportedly grew despondent, especially during heat waves. He left farm work to his brother and two daughters in La Crosse area. Body taken to Miller Brothers parlors. funeral plans pending.
Eugene H. Luening son of William Luening board of education president leaves for Chicago where he will marry Miss Margaret Dettmers daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Dettmers 3152 Cambridge avenue The wedding occurs Wednesday evening attended by Luening family and Alfreda Luening After marriage the couple will reside in La Crosse with Mrs Dettmers relation Leonard Frey in La Crosse noted The bride is well known locally and the couple will establish their home in La Crosse.
The post office announced new appointments from civil service exams. Substitute clerks are Forrest N. Clark and Chas. B. Jansky. substitute letter carriers are Oscar L. Dean, Edwin A. Daniels and Peter M. Chase. The new employees start work tomorrow.
Maurice E. McLaughlin of California, the American champion, defeated J. C. Parke in three straight sets to advance to the British title final. Parke holds the Irish and Scottish championship. Scores were 6-4 7-5 6-4.
Ferdie Roth started things with an early home run as North and South sides of the city clashed on Paradise Island during the La Crosse Poultrymen’s picnic. The North side won 9 to 8 amid boat arrivals, chicken bouillon stews, and contests led by William Fries who won the fat men's race.
Peter Stein dies attempting to save his sister Mrs. Pierce of Los Angeles in a Mississippi accident. Warren Pierce perishes while Biford Pierce is rescued by twelve year old Henry Stein. The bride witnesses the tragedy.
A 19 year old teamster Peter Stein and his 7 year old nephew Warren Pierce died after stepping into a river hole in the West Channel above the La Crescent road wagon bridge. Stein’s sister and her 9 year old son were rescued after Mary Pierce survived by buoyancy aid until help arrived. Henry Stein, 12, credits his swimming to life as he dragged his brother to safety. Gus Peterson aided victims and pulled the unconscious to shore. The tragedy unfolded as the party, including Stein's wife and mother, watched from the riverbank.
Yesterday saw a high of 96 and a low of 78 with 90 in precipitation. La Crosse and vicinity forecast showers tonight, cooler tomorrow. Wisconsin and Minnesota expect showers or fair, cooler conditions with moderate winds. The St Louis and Louisville high reached 100. Rivers St Paul and surrounding areas are falling slowly over 48 hours.
