Dust Bowl bugaboo threatens again in spring weather

Washington report warns that looming drought cycles and new dust storms could rival the Dust Bowl era. Officials cite 2,400,000 plowed-out acres in west Texas and western Oklahoma with insufficient cover, plus outbreaks from Colorado to the northern Great Plains. Soil conservation efforts have expanded since 1937, but officials say work remains only begun.

Fence Work Halts Ball Drift and Enclosures at West Avenue Grounds

The city recreation department tightens safety with a chain link fence around West Avenue Grounds. Everett Dodd leads the project, parts of the 100 foot by 100 foot sections on West Avenue and Jackson Street rise to six feet, tall at the corner, to stop balls from rolling into traffic. A second fence at Swanson field ends the unprotected area. Lifeguards at city beaches and the municipal pool will watch swimmers for signs of chilling or over-exertion, and the pool will close whenever temperatures dip below 70 degrees.
