The Wisconsin chapter of the National Association of Postmasters plans its annual convention in La Crosse June 25 to 27. Registration opens Sunday at 1 30 p m at the Stoddard hotel. Osborne A Pearson will give the main address at 6 30 p m Tuesday. J H Marks will speak at Monday noon and oversee the afternoon sessions. The event includes a school of instruction for postmasters with group work led by inspectors M E Eberlein and C W Christensen.
President Truman told reporters the nation cannot pay for a 70 group air force while commenting on pending congressional bills to authorize that strength. He noted the key issue is what the budget will permit, as the air force currently has about 48 first line groups.

Three men were wounded by gunfire at the American Enka plant in Morristown Tennessee during shift changes. Two hours later windows were shattered at the struck rayon producing plant as bullets fired from a highway caused damage. William McGinnis was critically injured. Victor McDaniel and James McCanney received superficial wounds.
Wisconsin seventh annual Badger Girls state held municipal elections. Patricia Zales of Kenosha Ann Blakefield Manitowoc and Mary Crandall of Manston were named to head mythical cities. Elm City elected only council women supervisors and a justice of the peace. General election for county and state offices will be Friday. Carmel Kostner Arcadia Norma Marsolek Independence Nancy Jacobson Viroqua Ashby were Western Wisconsin delegates gaining offices.
Five major railroads face a switchmen strike deadline as Congress moves swiftly on rent control. Truman expected to sign a six month extension with options for another six months, plus local decontrol powers for Chicago areas and county-level leeway. The action comes amid broader moves to soften Hatch Act penalties for federal employees.
Senate investigators released a seized Amerasia document citing information from diplomat John S. Service on two top secret Roosevelt to Chiang Kai-shek messages. Service denied communist collaboration and urged resistance to China’s domination. The case arises from the 1945 Amerasia raid and related charges against Service and others.

In a special Wednesday session the city council reconsidered and unanimously approved the beer license for Adolph von der Ohe. The council ratified D. D. Lewis as health officer succeeding W. P. Bamber and named Jason Jones to replace Charles Masters on the health committee. The July council meeting is set for Wednesday July 5.
Special correspondence reports Houston County Minnesota shows an overall population decline from 14,735 in 1940 to 14,419 in 1950. La Crescent leads county gains rising to 1,228 residents, up from 815, with Caledonia Brownsville Hokah and Spring Grove also advancing. Houston village falls slightly from 977 to 972.
Delegates at Badger Boys State near Ripon Wis prepare for Thursday elections to choose state officers. Competing for governor are Ken Wittenberg of La Crosse on the Nationalist ticket and James Moore of Racine on the Federalist ticket. The ticket lists include lieutenant governor secretaries of state treasurers attorneys general and other posts along with supreme court justices and circuit court judges.
In Redwood City California thirty people were injured when the Sequoia theater balcony ceiling collapsed and dumped about ten tons of plaster and reinforcing onto patrons. Fifteen required hospital care. one remained unconscious hours later.
The Senate approved a stop gap 15 day extension of the draft law before the Friday midnight deadline. The measure moves to the House by voice vote after Lucas of Illinois urged action to avoid delaying longer. The new deadline shifts to July 9.
Firefighters and a ship crew fought a stubborn fire at the No 2 slip of the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad car ferry docks in Ludington Michigan. The creosoted piling ignited around 6 30 a m from an undetermined cause and was only gradually brought under control three hours later.

Lieutenant Irving Schutt of Fargo North Dakota national guard parachuted to safety after his F 51 fighter crashed on a farm northwest of Milwaukee during firing practice near Sheboygan. He said the plane struck a towed target, an oil line broke and oil pressure dropped, prompting bailout from 6 500 feet. It was his first parachute jump.
A 107 year old tale from St. Petersburg about a Worcester savings deposit. A $10 bill placed on December 1, 1842 grew to $990 under interest. Charles D. Oliver’s father started the account for his son at Worcester County Institution for Savings. His daughter Mrs. Mabel Oliver Ross will cash it this week for “good purposes.”
John A. Puent 68 well known La Crosse painter died after a Wednesday fall from a roof at 944 Redfield Street. He lived at 608 East Avenue North and was found on the ground about 2 p.m. He died at 6 45 a.m. Thursday at a local hospital. He is survived by two sons six grandchildren and two brothers. Funeral services will be Saturday at Blaschke funeral home and St Josephs Cathedral with burial in Catholic cemetery. Rosary is set for Friday evening.
A symposium of farm programs heard a majority of agricultural economists and leaders agree farmers should bear part of the cost of price support efforts. Arguments featured a mix of calls for self financing, full parity plans, and continued government backing to prevent farmer bankruptcy.
Four accidents were reported to city police with direct reports at headquarters. Carl Anderson of Bangor reported being struck at George and Gillette, suffering a palm gash and bruised leg. He said the driver stopped and asked about medical help. Jack Anthony reported a second crash at Seventh and Tyler as he was eastbound. Elizabeth Dell of North 15th said she collided with a Camp McCoy man at 15th and King as she headed south. several soldiers were in the other car.
