Jailer Position Created By La Crosse County Board
The La Crosse County Board established a jailer position Thursday to staff on duty with inmates of the same sex. Eight matrons will handle female prisoners on on call basis, paid less than full time male jailers who serve as deputy sheriffs. A court action threat looms from matron representatives. A county personnel director presented a job description noting jailers book prisoners and supervise activities. Jailers will be county employees. Sheriff Black currently hires matrons, paid by the county, with no salary set. The board approved new staffing plans pending further details. In other action a registered sanitarian was hired. Lakeview hospital admission policy shifts to residency, not legal settlement, for county residents only. Beds reserved for county residents.
