New York roars with enthusiasm for the private citizen to be greeted as the nation’s idol. Officials prepare for a mighty hunter arrival with a headline reception. The prospect of multiple lucrative posts and salaries beyond the president’s looms as crowds anticipate action.
Washington desertions aside, officials and clerks gather to honor Theodore Roosevelt. Kaiserin Auguste Victoria with Col. Roosevelt anchors off Sandy Hook at 5:00 a.m.. vessel proceeds to quarantine by 7:00 a.m. He arrives, is welcomed by Mayor Gaynor at 11:00 a.m. and a parade along Broadway starts at 11:20 a.m. Crowning events include engrossed resolutions at 1:00 p.m. and Roosevelt departing for home with Nassau County neighbors after a 1:00 p.m. program.
The Kaiser Wilhelm II arriving Roosevelt on board at six this morning was 433 miles east of Ambrose Channel light with thick weather. The ship’s schedule remained intact and Sandy Hook was expected to be reached at the planned time.

Nat C Goodwin mining man and actor arrives in New York on the Cunard Mauretania denying reports of separation from his fourth wife Edna Goodrich He plans to attend the Jeffries Johnson fight then return to Paris stating Mrs Goodwin urged him to stay in Paris until fall and that he will go back after the bout
In Chicago on June 17 John J. Brittain treasurer of the Chicago Federation of Labor and two other leaders George H. Lakey and Charles G. Grasgell faced 30 day jail terms for violating an injunction. Brittain pledged to fight the case to the highest courts and said he would mortgage his home if needed.
William Schaefer, a rural mail carrier in Sheboygan Wisconsin, was bound over to the federal grand jury on a $1,000 bond after he opened and resealed letters of a girl on his route amid jealousy over other correspondence. A friend of the girl alerted authorities in Washington.
In Washington June 17 insurgents and Democrats win a major reform when a rules committee report favors a measure stripping the panel of power to smother bills. The plan, championed by Sherley of Kentucky, would permit the House by majority vote to discharge a committee and bring a bill to action. The clash foreshadows a push for a full committee on committees.

Washington June 17 Chairman Burrows of the senate committee on privileges and elections has convened a meeting to review bribery charges in the election of William Lorimer to the senate. Lorimer seeks an investigation and formal charges have been filed. The committee may recommend further action by the senate.
The body of Gust Carlston of Jamestown New York was found on the Chicago Burlington and Quincy tracks near the Onalaska pickle factory by a Burlington laborer. He is identified by papers on his clothing and his body shows severe injuries from a train incident possibly after a night of drinking. Coroner records indicate an inquest was not needed. relatives are being sought.
In Boston on June 17 the morning game between the St. Louis and Boston National League clubs was postponed due to wet field conditions.
A telegram from Sam Langford's manager reports the Langford versus Kaufman bout set for Goldfield Nevada with Tex Rickard accepting a cash bonus to stage there. The former Gans-Nelson arena will be enlarged for the fight and Governor Gillette reportedly ordered two state militia companies ready to intervene if needed.
Louis Blot, promoter, says the Langford-Kaufman bout will proceed in San Francisco despite Governor Gillette’s threats to use militia. He claims the law forbids state troops in a city without mayor or sheriff request and vows the fight will go on tomorrow night. Legal action and venue changes loom as Attorney General Webb seeks an injunction.
Senator Borah of Idaho denounced federal land policies in a vigorous senate speech. He argued western residents suffer from agricultural land bans and shortages of power sites and mines, calling the system cruel and unjust and alleging it forces settlers into city life or moonlighting in low paying town labor.
In Philadelphia on June 17 Helen Russell 23 a former slave in local dives stabbed Eugene Manola with scissors after being taunted by a giant Mexican man. Manola wounded badly in the breast is hospitalized and not expected to live. Russell is held without bail.
In Philadelphia on June 17 seven Chinese crew members of the British steamer Highland Monarch jumped overboard while nearing the Schuylkill to reach Auckland New Zealand. Four were drowned, with the fate of three unknown as authorities search for them and salvage attempts proceed.
The city endures the warmest day of the season with readings near 92 to 98 degrees. Despite the heat outside work continues and no prostrations were reported, though forecasts indicate a continued heat trend and possible storms. Chicago reports several heat deaths with six in 36 hours and ice distributions by charities may begin.
John Ennis the 68 year old pedestrian arriving in Chicago continues his ocean to ocean walk from New York to San Francisco. He aims to complete the trek in 100 days and is currently on the twenty fifth day. Ennis delivered a message from Mayor Gaynor to Mayor Busse and presented a bottle of Atlantic water to cast into the Pacific at San Francisco.
The Ridgewood Coal company of Scranton Pa files with the Interstate Commerce Commission alleging Lehigh Valley Railroad owns Lehigh Valley Coal and uses its control to withhold a railroad switch. The case centers on the Hepburn era commodity clause and competition between rivals with Lehigh Valley Coal receiving free switches.
The city unveils an ambitious schedule for 25 000 athletes across five boroughs as part of Mayor Gaynor's plan to ensure a safe and orderly Fourth of July celebrations. The press agent calls the program the greatest athletic schedule in world history.

A minority of the senate military affairs committee protested a bill to enlarge the army engineer corps and empower the president to replace F H Newell as head of the reclamation service with an army engineer. The June 17 session in Washington DC prompted vocal opposition to the measure.
Akron June 17. The Goodrich and Diamond Rubber companies announce a 25 percent price increase on all automobile tires and rubber products starting July 1. Manufacturers cite rising crude rubber costs as the reason for the higher prices.
