Schools Supt Eugene Balts warns the 1977 78 budget is about 100000 over what taxpayers can bear as the La Crosse Area Public School District Board reviews a 15651630 tentative budget for 1977 78. The plan includes a calendar year basis with a July 1 to June 30 state law change.
A 52 year old Stoddard woman Ethel M Jensen died when a heavy earth moving machine flipped onto her car on Highway 16 near the Knights of Columbus Hall. The driver Donald Clements said steering locked. Jensen worked at Jack Winter Inc. The incident marked La Crosse Countys fifth traffic fatality this year.
School board faces a possible $100 000 cut urged by Superintendent Batts risking elimination of some new programs and staff positions. Proposals include 20000 for hazardous-area student transportation and 24000 for remedial readingists plus 5000 for IGE study and 1000 for discipline alternatives. Other funds cover band coordination 1500 special education staffing 23966 Swanson Field maintenance 42700 two custodial staff and equipment, 2707 part time Pleasant Valley secretary, and 5000 teacher in-service. Budget figures compare 1976 77 and 1977 78 totals with fiscal year alignment.
The United States and Taiwan reached a four year order limiting Formosan shoe shipments to 122 million pairs for the year ending June 30, 1978 and 131 million pairs by 1981. The pact aims to shield American makers from import competition while avoiding tariffs. Ambassador James Shen signed the agreement in the Treaty Room.
Wisconsin correctional officials said about 100 Fitchburg residents who oppose the plan to double the inmate population at the Oak Hill Correctional Institution were informed that the expanded staffing would maintain security at the unfenced former school for delinquent girls near Oregon.
A 16 year old La Crosse boy Steven Hirsch was wounded in a Mississippi River boat explosion near La Crescent. He was treated for burns to the face arms and legs at St Francis Hospital in fair condition. The blast occurred off Hill's Boat Livery with six aboard. Neighbors helped extinguish and assist. owners and exact boat details remain unclear.
