Lawmaker's Baby Dies After Toy Phone Strangle
Michael McCann nine months old son of Democratic Assemblyman James A. McCann strangled Wednesday while playing in a home playpen. The mother found him suspended above a teddy bear as the cord looped around his neck and pressed his throat. The medical examiner attributed the death to the infant leaning onto the cord. The father was away in Madison. the couple has five other children.

Retired La Crosse Banker Gysbert Van Steenwyk Dies at 91
Gysbert Van Steenwyk 91 of 237 South Ninth Street a retired La Crosse banker and son of an early mayor died Wednesday evening in a La Crosse hospital. He is survived by widow Grace P two nieces and one nephew. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with Memorials to Christ Episcopal Church or the La Crosse Public Library. He retired from Batavian National Bank in January 1961 after a long career beginning in 1893. He helped found the La Crosse Trust Co and served on multiple boards including National Guardian Life. The funeral home Sletten McKee is in charge. The story notes his father G. Van Steenwyk was La Crosse mayor in 1873 and references a historic Milwaukee Railroad bridge controversy.
