Railroads Cooperating In Fire Risks
Railroads cooperate to cut forest fire hazards in Wisconsin's protected range. The 1965 annual review shows railroads remained the largest fire source with 650 fires, about 42 percent of all outbreaks. Calls were made to add spark arresters, improve maintenance, study fuel oil to cut diesel risk, and extend fire breaks. Protection costs rose to about $2.1 million for the year.
