The sale contract claimed solid pillar support for a hillside mine near the Kaw River. Pillars at the entrance are 12 feet square rock hewn and heavy enough to resist sinkage. Thirty lawsuits have targeted the city and a construction firm over earlier cave-ins. Wyandotte County may become a defendant as new cave-ins occur beyond city limits. The mining firm denies ownership and the rock crushing company that operated the mine has dissolved.
