Drowning at Black River Near Municipal Dock

Arlie Anderson a 19 year old La Crosse resident drowned in the Black River near the municipal dock around 11 30 a m. His companion Gary Graff 15 swam to safety after the hunting skiff began taking on water and capsizing. Fire crews and boats searched the river throughout the afternoon.

24 Milwaukee Road Cars In Derailment

A Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific freight train derailed two miles northwest of Elgin Illinois. Twenty four cars of a 67 car train bound for Chicago and eastern points were derailed with no injuries. Traffic was halted in both directions and through traffic rerouted while officials clear the wreckage. Tons of potatoes vegetables beef and thousands of gallons of wine were spilled from the cars.

Camp McCoy Area Off Limits Posted

Area residents are warned the Camp McCoy military reservation is dangerous during summer training from June 11 to September 3. The scope includes air strafing bombing and artillery firing with many dud shells that may explode on contact. The danger area lies between Clear River to the north La Crosse River to the south and county trunk roads H to the east and west.

Foss Expected as Honor Guest at Flag Day Program

Lieut. Col. Joseph Foss a World War II Marine Air ace and congressional Medal of Honor recipient is expected to appear as an honor guest at the Flag Day program in La Crosse.
