Samuel A. Johnson 84, veteran La Crosse painter and union founder, died at his home 1021 Division Street. He organized union 374, aided Labor temple ideas, and contributed to astronomy and Boy Scouts. Survived by son Paul A and stepdaughter Lewis Comeau. funeral arrangements pending.
Senator Wherry accuses President Truman and Secretary Acheson of conflicting statements that confuse the public about war dangers. Democratic leaders insist the president and secretary share peace goals. Myers argues the messages aim at the same objective and urge a strong defense to deter Soviet aggression. Gillette also calls for a steadfast defense as the path to peace.
A four month old twin girl named Linda Jane San Felipe was found suffocated in her crib Saturday in Milwaukee. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loren San Felipe.
City council may act this week on a proposed low rent housing project tied to a federal funding plan. An advisory referendum on entering a cooperation agreement could be decided Tuesday night, guiding aldermen at committee and full meetings later in the week.
Voters will cast yes or no on an agreement with the La Crosse housing authority to develop 200 low rent units. The measure sets 10 percent of shelter rent in lieu of taxes and requires demolition of unsafe units within five years. Funds come from government loans with bonds sold after project start.
Ernest Wyman Jr., 18, suffered first degree burns to 85 percent of his body when a pan of gasoline he carried in the Hillsboro Farm Service Co garage exploded after a spark ignited it. Fellow worker Marvin Kliner helped extinguish the flames. Kliner sustained minor burns. Wyman, son of late Ernest Wyman Sr., had rejoined school after earlier military service and graduated with his class.
La Crosse Republican Assemblyman Harry W. Schilling announced his bid for re election to the second La Crosse county district seat. He currently completes his fourth term, having served since 1935 with re elections in 1937 1947 and 1949.
Taverns and other license holders must close Tuesday while polls are open for the special low rent housing project referendum. Dist Atty John Coleman, after consulting the attorney general, says the same rules as state elections apply, closing from 8 p.m.
Senator Thye of Minnesota calls the Communist in government row destructive and proposes a conference of all GOP senators to decide a responsible party stance. Senator Millikin of Colorado says he would convene on formal request, but the GOP policy committee previously rejected taking a stand on the charges by Melet and McCarthy. Thye joined six other Republicans in a declaration of conscience criticizing party elements.
Frieda Ziese five years old remained critical in a Madison hospital after a cave in trapped her and sister Dorothy for about two hours on the Ziese farm near Elroy Wisconsin. Dorothy suffered a broken leg while Frieda has a broken pelvis and head injuries. Donald, their brother, escaped unharmed.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover praised press police cooperation as vital to law enforcement. In the Law Enforcement Bulletin Hoover credited newspapers and news services for aiding the war on crime by publishing photographs and descriptions of fugitives which led to captures and useful tips from the public. He urged continued intelligent collaboration between press and police nationwide.
A Communist front petition to outlaw the atom bomb has gained headway in Europe, with Berlin papers claiming 100 million signatures. Observers doubt immediate action but warn of dangerous potentialities and few counter-propaganda options. The move targets the United States and Russia alike, stirring emotions amid fear of war.
The Republican field for Wisconsin governor narrows after Rep. Frank B. Keefe withdraws due to medical advice. Remaining candidates are Harvey V. Higley Marinette Walter J Kohler Jr Appleton Gordon A Bubolz Appleton and Erwin L Benjamin St Croix Falls. Bubolz says Keefe’s exit enhances his chances and gains local support.
