Torrential winds and heavy rain flood La Crosse region. All roads suffer serious washouts and lowlands flood, hindering travel and commerce. Property and crops sustain tremendous damage across the district as the storm sweeps through.
Western Wisconsin endured a weekend storm with wind and rain causing about 500000 dollars in damage to railroads wires crops and buildings. La Crosse and surrounding districts faced rail disruptions with trains halted east and south and some lines isolated though parts of the line remained open by boat transfers to Victory Wisconsin. Buildings farms and crops suffered as the storm spread to eastern Minnesota with washouts and communication outages reported along several rail lines.
The La Crosse Diocese honors Sister M. Ludovica on her twenty fifth year as Mother Superior with a dawn mass at St. Rose convent and a 3 PM musical program. About 420 sisters attended as Bishop Schwebach presided and lighted tableaux appeared during an electrical storm that lit the scenes. Her leadership saw the building of St Francis hospital and other institutions including a new Third Chapel of Perpetual Adoration dedicated last April.
Washington Dispatch reports William R. Hearst is pressuring for action on the anthracite coal, railroads case as sixteen months pass without a decision. The independent operators recently filed a new suit on similar questions. Chairman Knapp oversees the case and shows limited support for Sherman Act prosecutions.
A Japanese chiropractor was arrested today for practicing without a license as he vows to challenge state law. He says he came prepared to fight the issue and will carry the case to the Supreme Court.
Japanese chiropractor Shegataro Morikubo was arrested on a warrant sworn by the state medical board chair for practicing medicine without a license. He pleaded not guilty and the case was continued to Saturday to allow witnesses. Morikubo claims osteopathy and chiropractic are separate sciences and vows to pursue the matter to the Supreme Court if needed.
In a major collision off Shelter Cove between the steamers San Pedro and Columbia, about 150 people drowned and 88 survived. The Columbia sank quickly with most passengers trapped below deck while the San Pedro, heavily damaged, was towed to Eureka. Survivors described heart rending scenes as wives clung to husbands before perishing. Captain Dolan of the Columbia was missing. The Roanoke and Elder assisted, rescuing survivors and recovering bodies.
A Tokio dispatch reports four hundred miners died in a Toyooka mine blast caused by fire-damp ignition. London reports say 471 were working underground at the time with many escaped and others trapped as fire rages.
Communication was limited as Southeastern tracks between the city and Stoddard washed away and a washout feared near Viroqua. Bell and La Crosse Telephone lines suffered outages from lightning with 300 phones out at dawn but most restored by afternoon. Mississippi and La Crosse rivers rose as heavy rain fell at four inches per hour briefly, driving current across the front to Pettibone park.

Clinton Indiana July 22 It is alleged the state will prove Fred H Magill arrested in California for his first wife s murder threatened to kill her if she refused to sign deeds allowing him to waste a $200 000 inheritance. Investigators seek domestics from the Magill household who can testify. It is believed Pet Magill letters are forgeries.
In Karlsruhe on July 22 a court hearing noted a sensational move by Herr Dietz to summon Lenck, a young artist jailed with Hau and later acquitted. Lenck claimed Hau’s interview revealed new information affecting the murder case involving Olga Melitor, Hau’s wife’s sister, who had a questionable closeness to Hau. Lenck refused to speak without Hau’s permission, and Dietz urged compulsory proceedings to obtain Lenck’s account.
A mad dog roamed Rushford Minnesota on July 22 frightening locals. The dog belonging to the Northwestern hotel proprietor bit several dogs and eluded capture before being shot. The Board of Health issued a muzzle order for all dogs and authorized police to shoot unmunched canines after today, with many already muzzled.
Attorneys F C Winter and John C Gavney for Frankie La Salle offered a 15000 compromise to the sole heir of Gustav W Ensel to prevent loss of inheritance in county court. Judge Brindley will rule next Monday after arguments end. The heir seeks 40000 claimed as money advanced. German residence noted.
Boise July 22 Attorney Richardson opened the Haywood trial arguing the defendant cannot be convicted on self confessed murder evidence. He said Steunenberg's assassination was planned by Orchard for revenge and defended Haywood's political activity aiding workers. He claimed the Western Federation of Miners with forty thousand members bears no guilt if the state's theory is wrong.
In Racine on July 22 an electric storm killed Wenzel Miksch near St. Mary's church in Waterford. The strike toppled the steeple, injuring several worshipers and destroying buildings, horses, and cattle.
Bert Bruice killed his bride of one month in Camden New Jersey and fatally shot himself after a quarrel. The incident occurred today as authorities reported the domestic tragedy in the early evening.
The Madison team arrived in the city at 3 p m and the game was called at 4 p m this afternoon.
Gus Schlich located a dead man body in the Mississippi River above the railroad bridge this morning. A search party went out in Fowler's launch this afternoon and planned to return at four o'clock.

New York reports Wellie Madigan died in the morning accident when her auto, carrying her fiancé Dr Edgar Gallagher, was struck by a train. The tragedy ends a forthcoming marriage and involves a medical professional as the groom. Local authorities investigated the collision and issued preliminary statements.
Bedford Pa July 22 The Gliddenites left at 7 this morning for a 155 mile run to Baltimore. They are allowed ten hours for the trip.
Four aeronauts who ascended in a military balloon last Friday are believed drowned after the craft was lost at sea. The balloon was later picked up with all four men missing.
Word has been received of the death of William Hoeft at his Chicago home. He was a son in law of Mr. N Haefter of this city and the remains will be brought here for burial. Funeral arrangements to be announced later.
