In Chicago on July 9 F. E. Ellis, ex member of the North Western Lumbermen's association, testified in the government’s suit against the alleged lumber trust. Ellis denied the group tried to coerce small dealers or run a blacklist publication for refractory dealers.
Milwaukee July 9 delegates at the Wisconsin Jewelers convention predicted tariff reductions will reduce jewelry prices. The second day of the annual meeting opened with discussion of market effects and consumer impact.

The House, after a frantic search, mustered a quorum and approved 104 to 102 to hire special counsel for the special lobby investigation into Mulhall charges. Madison July 9 Special Notice of an appeal to Dane County circuit court seeks to overturn the railroad commission decision on express tariffs contending it is confiscatory and requests a temporary restraining order. Express firms indicate they will file notice of appeal in Madison Wednesday. The decision could save the public over 100000 annually and would take effect July 15 unless injunction granted. The Merchants and Manufacturers' Association originally started the case. later the commission issued a general order.
