July 4 events in La Crosse drew thousands for a day long observance under sunny skies. The program opened with a memorial dedication and closed with fireworks. Roy L. Wing ers American Legion Post commander Edward Cotterwick called the turnout tremendous. Booster button sales lagged though, he noted.
Secretary of Labor Wirtz urged both sides to resume collective bargaining and settle the rail work rules dispute. If rejected, legislation or a nationwide strike looms. He proposed a two year trial based on emergency board recommendations and a 20 day extension for negotiations with binding decisions on unresolved issues. The plan aims to avoid a strike and strengthen bargaining by a human relations approach.
In Waukon Iowa two girls Sonja Anderson twelve and Sandra Dahlstrom eight drowned while wading in Village Creek about five pm Thursday. Sonja’s brother Gordon Anderson pulled both from the water after another child ran to summon him. Fire crews and a county medical examiner declared death by drowning. Funeral plans await. Surviving family members are listed.
A statue of Mary Sawyer, linked to the nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb, was unveiled on Sterling Common. Alfred Altman of New York, head of the National Dairymen's Association, Inc., unveiled it. he owns a nearby summer home near Mary Sawyer’s cottage. Mary, born in 1806, nursed a sick lamb, which followed her to school, inspiring John Roulstone to write verses that became a famous rhyme.
Three Minneapolis residents died in a head on crash on Highway 12 near Humbird Wisconsin. Rob ert Novak and other occupants were treated for injuries. The holiday period deaths pushed Wisconsin highway toll to 383, down from 429 last year.
Evan Hall a 28 year old Union City electrician and parachutist died when his chute failed to open during a Fourth of July exhibition in Harter Park attended by about 5000 people. He jumped early and fell into a pasture half a mile away.
AMERICUS Ga AP A state patrolman's 200 yard rifle shot from behind a hedgerow ended a killing spree by a convict whose Independence Day bid for freedom left three dead, one wounded and four hostages. Richard Hale, a 14 year old orphan, shot with courage as Weaver tried to dig a foxhole. Weaver, 23, died after the shot. The spree began in Marianna Florida and ended near this Georgia town. Richard said he was scared but acted when Weaver slumped. Weaver had shot Deputies Finch and Creel and killed Mayo, then abducted hostages and fled north.
Auto passengers push holiday highway deaths higher as Independence Day weekend traffic builds. By midday the toll reached 182 with multiple crashes killing several people at once. The four day total nears the 1961 peak of 509 fatalities.
Chicago crowds jeered Mayor Richard J. Daley and Rev. J. H. Jackson at a July Fourth NAACP rally as 20,000 gathered on the lakefront. Daley paused then left after anti Daley chants and threats, while Jackson faced boos and the call Uncle Tom. Sen. Paul Douglas urged moderation during remarks at the convention. The weekend saw heavy travel and a rising July Fourth death toll per the National Safety Council.
Edward P. Newburg 73 of 2627 Van Loon Road dies Friday in a local hospital after a heart attack. Survived by widow Elsie, son William, three grandchildren, two brothers, and a sister. Funeral Monday at Blaschke Funeral Home and Blessed Sacrament Church with burial in Catholic Cemetery. Born September 25, 1889 in La Crosse, he headed Newburg Men’s Wear Store for 59 years, became president in 1930, and married Elsie Ott in 1913.
In a mass Independence Day protest at Gwynn Oak amusement park near Baltimore 275 whites and Negroes were arrested, including Rev. Dr. Eugene Carson Blake. Clergymen from multiple faiths faced trespass charges. 69 demonstrators were cited for disorderly conduct as police moved barricaded crowds onto buses. Hearings set for Woodlawn magistrate. many demonstrators from New York and Philadelphia.
U S Atty Gen Robert F Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy welcomed their fifth son by cesarean at St Elizabeths Hospital in Boston. The newborn weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces and both mother and child are reported fine. The baby, born on July 4, joins eight children in the Kennedy family, with Kathleen born earlier. The family arrived by helicopter from Hyannis Port, Mass, roughly two hours before delivery. The father said the boy resembles his grandfather, former Ambassador Joseph P Kennedy.
In Britain two special elections to fill vacant Commons seats saw the ruling Conservative party lose ground as Labor candidates captured both seats. The results boost Labor while the Conservatives face ongoing losses in local and national contests.
Atty General George Thompson withdraws from Wisconsin reapportionment case and argues current Senate and Assembly districts are unconstitutional. He says final validity lies with the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Reynolds could veto the Legislature’s plan, which would trigger further action.
Queen Elizabeth II slipped on the running board of her car at the Royal Agricultural Show in Kenilworth England. She was helped to her feet by Prince Philip and declared she was not hurt. The show director Francis Pemberton echoed that she simply slipped and suffered no injury.
