Police battled three armed snipers in a downtown New Orleans hotel. Six people died and 17 were injured as officers sealed the area and used tear gas and helicopters. a survivor and a renewed gunfight Sunday raised the tense standoff.
In Washington the Watergate burglary trial began as jury selection started for seven men accused of breaking into the Democratic National Committee. Prosecutor Earl Silbert listed 60 government witnesses including Jeb Magruder and Hugh Sloan as trials loom, with 1,000 jurors summoned and Secrecy to be maintained for the panel.
The Nixon administration authorized up to 250 million gallons of extra No 2 fuel oil for the current winter by raising quotas from the Virgin Islands for January to April. Officials said districts east of the Rocky Mountains may see higher imports while buyers must certify the oil is needed to meet contracts.
About 75 supporters of the Camp McCoy 3 were denied courtroom seats as jury selection began in the bombing case. Defendants Stephen Geden Chase and Kreps faced four counts for stealing explosives and damaging facilities near Sparta. The case ties to the American Servicemen's Union antiwar group and involved a separate ruling on Kreps.
