The man killed by a Southern Minnesota passenger train on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as Wolfgang Ekel, a 69 year old native of Bavaria. Franz Bartle identified the corpse, noting he last appeared at Bartl Brewery and had been living near La Crescent awaiting new work. No information about his family or relatives is available.
Samuel T. Warfield found guilty of conspiracy to defraud Mrs. James A. Patton wife of a Chicago grain magnate and sentenced to three years in prison plus a $2000 fine. Co-defendant Willis N. Cooper acquitted. The scheme involved selling bogus deluxe editions to wealthy victims in Boston Philadelphia St. Louis and Milwaukee totaling over $500 000.
Madison Wis Jan 2 The Monday inauguration of state officers will bring no change in state administration. Except for John Strange of Oshkasa who will succeed W D Connor as lieutenant governor, the same officials remain in office. Ceremonies at noon in the supreme court chambers followed by a reception and an inaugural ball in the evening.
Three clashes broke out today in Chicago's Little Italy sparked by earthquake excitement. Police say the riots involved many shots fired but no injuries reported yet.
Public funeral services were held today for Prof. Geo W. Hough the renowned astronomer who died at his Evanston home. The Chicago area obituary notes his prominence in astronomy and his passing on January 2.
